ROANOKE REGIONAL ECONOMIC INDICATORS

The Consumer Price Index rose 0.3 percent between April and May to stand at 152.2 points at the end of May. For the 12 months ending in May, the index - the government's primary measure of inflation - rose 3.2 percent.

The index was 151.9 in April and 147.5 in May 1994, which means that a collection of goods and services that cost $14.75 last year had risen to a price of $15.22 last month.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics said the index would have been 455.8 if the government still used 1967 as a base year of 100 points instead of using an average for the years 1982 to 1984. That means that a basket of goods and services that cost $10 in 1967 would have cost $45.58 last month, an increase of 355.8 percent.
