BOTETOURT MAY BUY 900 ACRES

The Botetourt County Board of Supervisors is expected to announce today the purchase of nearly 900 acres to be used for future industrial and commercial development, a possible school and a county-owned park.

Sources familiar with the purchase said the county has agreed to buy about 870 acres from the estate of the late Mary Blount.

The land fronts U.S. 220 just north of Amsterdam.

According to court records, the Blount estate is made up of six parcels ranging from 7.82 acres to 336.77 acres.

Sources say the county wants to use about 600 acres for industrial development.

The county was soliciting help Monday from the Roanoke Valley Economic Development Partnership in promoting a "major" economic development announcement, scheduled for 2:30 p.m. today in the county supervisors' meeting room.

Details of the purchase were not available Monday.
