COAL PRODUCTION GOES UP SLIGHTLY

Domestic coal production totaled 18.1 million tons during the week ending June 10, up slightly from the 18 million tons produced the previous week, the U.S. Department of Energy reported Monday.

The U.S. coal industry produced 19.5 million tons in the same week last year, according to the department's Energy Information Administration.

Virginia mines produced 746,000 tons during the week ending June 10, up from 689,000 a week earlier but down from 748,000 tons in the corresponding week a year ago.

Domestic coal production so far this year is 447 million tons, 3 percent ahead of last year's production at this time.

The week's production accounts for bituminous and lignite coal.
