IN SERVICE

Blacksburg resident Lt. Col. Eileen Hadbavny, U.S. Air Force Reserve, Nurse Corps, received the 1995 Mary T. Klinker Award. The award recognizes individuals who make significant contributions to, or achievements in, the field of aeromedical evacuation.

Hadbavny provided humanitarian service as director of Aeromedical Evacuation Forces during the United Nations Operation Somalia II and Operation Continue Hope. She commanded an Aeromedical Evacuation Communication Center with attached strategic medical crews outside of Somalia. She also directed an interservice program to educate personnel unfamiliar with aeromedical evacuation and introduced an aggressive stress management program during the period of nightly mortar attacks.

Hadbavny is assigned as an Individual Mobilization Augmentee attached to the 89th Aeromedical Staging Squadron at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. In her civilian career, she has worked in various medical and surgical nursing positions and occupational health and family practices. Currently, she is an independent contract nurse for Portamedic and a volunteer for the American Red Cross Disaster Health Services in Blacksburg.

Chief Master Sgt. Gratton E. Jones retired June 15 from the U.S. Air Force, after 30 years of service. Jones is the late son of Mr. and Mrs. Gratton Jones of Mt. Tabor. His wife, Joyce, is the daughter of Wanda Vaught and the late Clyde Vaught Jr. of Christiansburg.

Jones has served in combat several times and was stationed in many states and overseas. He and his wife have made their residency in Oklahoma City, where their daughter Danielle goes to school.

Air Force Airman David C. Holt graduated in spring from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Tex. Airmen who complete the training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

A 1994 graduate of Christiansburg High School, Holt is the son of Roy P. and Tammy J. Holt of Christiansburg.

Marine Lance Cpl. John M. Morefield received a Meritorious Mast. The award is an official recognition from a Marine's commanding officer. He was cited for outstanding service while assigned with Marine Wing Support Squadron 274, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps, Air Station at Cherry Point, N.C.

Morefield is a 1992 graduate of Pulaski High School. He is the son of Wanda M. Smith of Hiwassee.

Army Spc. Michael C. Sparta entered basic training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. this spring. He is the son of Barbara C. Griffin of Christiansburg.

Army Pvt. Garry A. Stephens entered basic training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C., this spring. A 1993 graduate of Giles County High School, he is the son of James and Sue Stephens of Pearisburg.

Army Pvt. Freeman K. Lindsey completed basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C., in May. A 1993 graduate of Pulaski County High School, Lindsey is the son of Robert and Katie Lindsey of Pulaski.

Navy construction apprentice Jason P. Shipbaugh of Narrows recently completed a seven-month overseas deployment to Europe and Africa with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Three. He was one of 650 men providing construction and community service to 14 countries.

Shipbaugh's battalion is based at Point Maugu, Calif. A 1994 graduate of Narrows High School, he is the son of Nancy Sheets of Narrows.

Marine Pvt. Bryce F. Duncan recently earned the title Marine after completing 11 weeks of training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

Duncan graduated from from Auburn High School in 1994. He is the son of Dennis Duncan and Karen Westmoreland, both of Christiansburg.

Marine Pfc. Jason A. Dunn recently reported for duty with 2nd Assault Amphibious Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C. The 1994 Giles County High School graduate, Dunn joined the Marine Corps in October 1994. He is the son of Martha and Spencer Dunn Jr. of Pearisburg.

At the annual Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets awards ceremony, Army Reserve Cadet Kelly M. Dickerson was given the Department of the Army ROTC Superior Cadet Award, the American Legion ROTC Academic Award and the Distinguished Service Alumni Award.

Dickerson is the son of Helen Harrison of Christiansburg.

Army Spc. Shawn P. Rogers was recently decorated with the Army Achievement Medal, awarded to soldiers for meritorious service, acts of courage and other outstanding accomplishments.

Rogers is a food specialist at Warner Barracks, Bamberg, Germany. A 1990 graduate of Christiansburg High School, he is the son of Frank and Sandy Rogers of Christiansburg. He is the son-in-law of Falton and Helen Linkous of Blacksburg.

Marine Pfc. Bentley O. Ratcliffe graduated from the Marine Corps basic combat engineering course. A 1993 graduate of Giles County High School, Ratcliffe joined the Marine Corps in September 1994. He is the son of Marcie Bishop of Blacksburg.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Bryan C. Miller recently completed a six-month overseas deployment aboard the aircraft carrier USS Constellation, which included duty in the Persian Gulf. Miller was one of more than 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard the ship.

Miller graduated from Pulaski High School in 1988 and joined the Navy September 1988. He is the son of Martha Miller of Pulaski.

Marine Pfc. Justin P. Skorupa completed 11 weeks of training to earn the title Marine. Skorupa is a 1990 graduate of Radford High School.
