Pulaski County soccer tryouts

PULASKI - Pulaski County soccer tryouts for fall travel teams will be Monday, June 26 and Tuesday, June 27 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. each night at the New River Community College.

Questions or sign-ups for the Under-10 division (birthday after Aug. 1, 1985) should be referred to Dan Quinlan at 980-8479. Questions or sign-ups for the Under-13 (birthday after Aug. 1, 1982), Under-14 (birthday after Aug. 1, 1981) and Under-15 (birthday after Aug. 1, 1980) should be referred to Craig Dobyns at 674-5743 or Jess Southern at 980-4972. Roosters must be completed this summer for fall registration.

RU summer arts program

RADFORD - There is still time to sign up for Radford University's Summer Arts Conservatory. The one-week program features well-known preformers who will offer individual and small group instruction in dance, theatre, madrigal singing and instrumental jazz.

The program is open to students in rising 9-12 grades who have previous study and experience in the offered art forms.

Courses in computer and digital technology will also be provided through the university's Center for Media Arts Technology.

The Conservatory will be Sunday, July 9, through Saturday, July 15. Program cost is $350 and includes tuition, room in the residence halls, all meals, recreation and supplies. For more information and application, call Dean Joseph Scartelli at 831-5265.

Pedal, Paddle, Splash, Dash

RADFORD - The 10th Annual Pedal, Paddle, Splash, Dash Quadrathalon will be Saturday, July 8. The event is sponsored by Radford Community Hospital Wellness Center. Events will start at 7:30 a.m. at Bisset Park in Radford.

The event consists of a 1/2-mile swim, 131/2-mile bike ride, 5.3 mile run and 2-mile canoe. Interested persons can enter any of the four divisions including individual, mixed pairs, male pairs and four-person teams. Entry fee is $15 per individual, $30 per doubles team and $40 per four-person team. Deadline is June 30.

For more information and applications, call the Wellness Center at 639-3241. Application forms are also available at most area sporting good stores, health clubs and fitness centers.

Dog obedience classes planned

RADFORD - Train your dog. The Radford Park and Recreation Department is offering basic dog obedience classes starting Saturday, June 24. The classes will cover basic obedience such as sit, stay, come or recall, down and heel during the five week period. Classes will also be divided into various levels of training, including novice and expert.

Each class is one hour with a 10 to 15 minute question period at the end. Classes are limited to 10 persons and will be at Bisset Park Shelter No. 3. Cost of the class is $50 and individuals must register for the class. Registration is being taken at the Radford Park & Recreation Department. For more information, call 731-3633.

Adult graduation Friday night

CHRISTIANSBURG - The sixth-annual adult graduation ceremony will be Friday, June 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the Christiansburg High School auditorium. The ceremony will honor 38 adult graduates from Montgomery County who have completed their secondary education by earning high school diploma or a General Educational Development (GED) certificate. Four of the graduates earned their high school diploma and 34 earned their GED certificates.

The keynote address will be presented by James L. Sellers, assistant superintendent of instruction in Montgomery County Schools. Brenda S. Bishop, adult literacy coordinator, will give the opening remarks and award the certificates. Judith B. Rutherford, director of student services for Montgomery County Public Schools, will present the graduates. Four graduating students will present graduation addresses. A reception will follow the ceremony.
