KING PICKS UP LONE SPOT FOR SENIOR OPEN

Billy King, from Blue Hills Golf Club in Roanoke, shot a 69 on Monday at Meadowbrook Country Club in Richmond to claim the only spot available to a field of 30 in U.S. Senior Open golf qualifying.

King played in the U.S. Senior Open last year in Pinehurst, N.C., and played in the Senior PGA Championship this year. The Senior Open will be played June 29-July 2 at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.

In AMF-Signet Open qualifying Tuesday at Staunton Country Club, Mark Frye, Jeff Sprinkle, Robey Roberson and Mark Croye earned berths in the field for the July 20-23 tournament at Willow Oaks Country Club in Richmond.

In other sports in the region:

The Roanoke Valley Sports Club has begun a drive toward increasing its membership for the 1995-96 year. Membership in the club, which holds monthly dinner meetings with guest speakers August through May, is $25 annually.

The sports club would like to increase its membership from 350 to 600. Membership is open to those age 21 and older.

Prospective members should write the club at P.O. Box 1112, Salem, 24153, or call club president Brad Mullins (989-8840) or board members Dan Wooldridge (389-7373) or Jody Moir (989-5927).

Washington and Lee's Robert Hull is The Sporting News' preseason choice as NCAA Division III Defensive Player of the Year in football.

Hull, a senior tackle from Lexington, was a Football Gazette first-team All-American last season and a Division III Sports Information Directors' second-team choice. He had 106 tackles, seven sacks and 12 other tackles for losses. He also forced four fumbles and blocked two kicks.

First-ever meetings with Florida State and Clemson and home dates with East Tennessee State, Middle Tennessee State and Duquesne highlight the 1995-96 Radford University men's basketball schedule.

The season opens Nov.25 with a home game vs. Tennessee-Martin. Other key contests include trips to state rivals VMI on Dec.2, Dec.2 in Lexington,, on Dec. 5.

The Highlanders renew a rivalry with East Tennessee State, playing host to the Buccaneers on Dec.7, the first meeting between the schools since 1986. Middle Tennessee State invades the Dedmon Center on Dec.9, the 15th anniversary of the building's opening.(Complete schedule in Scoreboard. B4)

Radford was 16-12 last season, the Highlanders' fifth consecutive winning campaign. Coach Ron Bradley welcomes back three starters, including all-conference guard Anthony Walker.

Larry Bowles struck out 17 batters as Rocky Mount Post 6 downed Roanoke North 7-4 in a American Legion baseball game at Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Rocky Mount.
