MAN CHARGED IN 2 RESTAURANT ROBBERIES

A 30-year-old Roanoke man charged with robbing the Dairy Queen on Orange Avenue Northeast also was charged Wednesday with robbing the Hardee's restaurant across the street.

About 9:45 p.m. Monday, a man handed the manager of Hardee's at 2301 Orange Ave. N.E. a note that said he was there to rob the store and needed money, police said. He told the manager that he had put a bomb in the bathroom. He fled with an undetermined amount of cash.

Tuesday, about 6:10 p.m., the Dairy Queen was robbed by a man who also handed the manager a note demanding money and saying that he had placed explosives in the restroom, police said. He fled on foot with a Dairy Queen bag filled with money, they said.

The man stopped at a nearby business to call a cab. Police were notified, and officers traced the taxi to a home in the 1700 block of Dunbar Street Northwest. They arrested Paul Edward Troutman, who, they said, was inside with a Dairy Queen bag of cash.

When officers searched Troutman's pockets, they said they found some cocaine. He also was with possession of the drug.

No bomb was found in either restaurant, and in neither incident did the alleged robber display a weapon. Police have not recovered the money taken from Hardee's.

Troutman remained in the Roanoke City Jail without bond Wednesday night.
