HOUSTON - Ford Motor Co. must pay $22.5 million in punitive damages to parents of a Texas A&M University student killed in 1992 when her Ford Bronco II overturned, a jury ruled Thursday.
It was the first time Ford has been found negligent in a Bronco II case. But the award was expected to be cut at least in half, because jurors found the company did not act with malice. Under Texas rules, punitive damages cannot exceed four times the actual damages in the absence of malice.
The same jury on Wednesday awarded $2.5 million in actual damages to Robert and Glenda Cammack, whose 21-year-old daughter, Jennifer, died in 1992. Testimony showed that Jennifer Cammack's Bronco II overturned after blowing a tire.
Jurors found the Bronco II overturns too easily and Ford was negligent in its design. Ford said it would appeal.

Visa, MasterCard form Internet team
NEW YORK - Visa and MasterCard will announce today they've teamed up to jointly develop a safe way for consumers to pay for goods on the Internet using their credit cards, sources said.
The companies, which have been pursuing separate courses, decided to unite their efforts to create scrambling software that will let people make purchases on the global computer network without having to worry about hackers stealing their credit card numbers, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The companies, both owned by groups of banks, together have 691.5 million cards worldwide.
