TRAILS' GRANT MONEY COMES THROUGH

The Commonwealth Transportation Board followed through Thursday with a promise of grant money for two New River Valley trail projects.

The board officially voted to give the Huckleberry Trail $235,585 and the New River Trail $200,000. Both awards to the local rails-to-trails conversion projects were tentatively approved last month.

The Huckleberry Trail will use the money to fund construction of the planned footpath from Blacksburg to the New River Valley Mall.

The New River Trail money will assist extending the existing 57-mile pathway into downtown Pulaski to the community's newly restored train station.

Both trails were among 32 Virginia projects that split $8.6 million from federal Intermodal Surface Transportation Act funds. The money is designed to be allocated to alternative transportation projects.
