TECH'S ALFANO TO LEAD COACHES

Virginia Tech's Carol Alfano has been elected second vice president of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association for the 1995-96 season, which means she will serve as the association's president in 1997-98.

Alfano, who was elected by her peers, will begin a four-year term on the WBCA's executive committee on Sept.1, serving as second vice president in 1995-96, first vice president in `96-97, president in `97-98 and past president in `98-99.

In 17 seasons, Alfano's Tech teams have compiled a 271-230 record, including NCAA Tournament appearances this year and in 1994.

In other sports in the region:

The Roanoke Valley Youth Soccer Club is bringing some of the region's top boys' soccer players in the 14- to 19-year-old age group to the River's Edge Sports Complex for a tournament Saturday and Sunday.

The club will serve as host for the seventh annual Virginia Youth Soccer Association Olympic Development Border Cup, which brings together 18-player teams representing New Jersey, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. Roanoke-area players on the Virginia roster are Tait Duus, Andy Newton, Chris Hewitt and Zach Krause.

Saturday's first game will begin at 8 a.m., with the last to start at 8 p.m. Sunday's games will kick off at 8 a.m., and the championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
