ABINGDON - Drama camps for young people will be offered by Barter's First Light Theatre this summer, with each of two classes ending with a play written and performed by the students.
The classes will be offered for ages 6-11 June 26 through June 30, and ages 12-18 July 31 through Aug. 4. They will meet from 9 a.m. to 12 noon Monday through Friday at Saint Thomas Episcopal Church, 124 E. Main St. in Abingdon.
Applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until the starting date of each class, up to a maximum of 20 students per class. Tuition is $130 per student.
Application forms are available at the Barter box office or by calling 628-2281, extension 327.
"The classes will introduce students to basic acting skills through the use of theater games and improvisation," said Susan Boulle, director of Barter's First Light Education Wing. "These exercises will help develop students' concentration and communication skills while making them feel more comfortable in front of a group."
Mural unveiling
A mural painted by Alexandria artist Allen "Big Al" Carter and Roanoke-area high school students will be unveiled Saturday at Center in the Square.
The mural, which has a Roanoke Valley theme, will hang on an outside wall of Center in the Square above the city market through the summer.
The unveiling will occur at a 1:30 p.m. reception for Carter at the Art Museum of Western Virginia. Entertainment will be provided by the William Penn Trio. Admission is free.
An exhibit of Carter's paintings, "Vivid Encounters: Paintings by Big Al Carter," is on display in the museum's first floor galleries through Sept. 10.
