RESIGNATION AND SABBATICAL MAKE MINISTERIAL NEWS

The Rev. Joe Borden has left the staff of Blacksburg Baptist Church after more than 10 years as associate pastor with special responsibilities in music. Borden said he will enter the field of music education and may work part time for a church.

He is the second staff member of Blacksburg Baptist to leave in recent weeks. The Rev. Ray Allen, pastor for 20 years, has retired and is on a trip to Alaska.

The Rev. Gary Schroeder, pastor of Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in Blacksburg, is on a three-month sabbatical for study. Schroeder has been at the church for more than seven years. During his absence, the Rev. Lisa Klein, associate pastor, is administering the parish program.

SERVICES

A potluck dinner and ``vision Sunday,'' in which participants can share their dreams and visions, is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Blacksburg Metaphysical Church. 231-5307 or 951-0566.

Paula Markham will speak about ``Visionquest'' at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the New River Valley on Gladewood Drive in Blacksburg at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. 552-5273.

New Haven Baptist Church in Floyd will celebrate its 150th anniversary Sunday. The church was established in 1845 and is one of the oldest churches in Floyd County. 745-2856.

MAKING A JOYFUL NOISE

The children of Bethel and Fairlawn United Methodist Churches will perform the musical ``Amazing Grace'' Sunday at Bethel United Methodist Church on Lovely Mount Drive in Radford at 9:30 a.m. 639-6675.

David and the Giants, a band that has been making Christian music for 18 years and recently released their 16th album, ``Angels Unaware,'' will perform at Christiansburg High School July 21 at 7 p.m. Admission is $5. 381-1006.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOLS

Vacation Bible School at Cambria Baptist Church is scheduled for Sunday-Friday and is open to children ages 4 through sixth grade. The times for Sunday-Thursday are 6:15-8:30 p.m., with registration beginning at 5:45 p.m. Sunday. Monday-Thursday there will be a supper snack at 5:45 p.m., and on Friday, an open house will begin at 7 p.m. 382-2490.

``Seaside with the Savior'' is the theme for Vacation Bible School at Abundant Life Fellowship in Pilot, Monday-Friday from 7-9 p.m. The school is open to nursery-school children to adults. Transportation is available. 382-4443.

Blacksburg Baptist Church's Vacation Bible School is Monday-Friday, 9 -11:30 a.m. It's open to children 3 years old to fifth grade. 552-3869.

HAPPENINGS

Homecoming at Bethel United Methodist Church on Lovely Mount Drive in Radford begins today at 6 p.m. with an ice cream social, games, contests, and other events. The church's children will perform a musical, ``Amazing Grace,'' Sunday at 9:30, followed by music, speakers, testimonials and food. 639-6675.

The senior citizens of Asbury United Methodist Church in Christiansburg will have a fish, hot-dog and bake sale today, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Proceeds will go to the building fund. 382-0743.

Young people are invited to ``Keep the Fire'' meetings, sponsored by Straight Street, on the first Wednesday of every month at Straight Street, 7-8:30 p.m. The evening features teaching and singing, followed by free food and games.

The first annual Women's Day Observance at the First Missionary Baptist Church in New River is set for July 9. The Women's Day Committee is raising money for the church's building fund, and contributions are needed by June 10. 639-5331.

Youths at Auburn United Methodist Church will perform house cleaning, mowing or weeding. Donations will be used to attend a youth conference. 382-4318.

Christian Community Outreach in Radford is having a food outreach on the fourth Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union Hall in Fairlawn. Food boxes will be available on a first-come, first-served basis to families and people who meet USDA income criteria. 639-5686.
