Forry Wells went 3-for-4 with three doubles and two RBI, and Vincente Garcia and Steve Bernhardt each added two RBI as Salem pounded the Lynchburg Hillcats 7-3 on Friday night to remain the league's only undefeated team in the second half.
Salem (3-0), which has won six straight overall, jumped on Hillcats starter Sean Lawrence in the first inning. Chris Sexton led off with a walk and Garcia followed with a two-run homer to left.
The Hillcats (2-1), who have lost seven of eight to the Avalanche this season, answered with two runs in the bottom of the second. Charles Peterson led off with a walk and stole second. One out later, Ramon Zapata singled to left to bring home Peterson with Lynchburg's first run. Zapata stole second and came home on Tommy Robertson's RBI single to tie the score at 2.
After scoring an unearned run in the third on Edgard Velasquez's sacrifice fly, the Avalanche added all the runs it would need in the fourth. Keith Grunewald led off with a single and Wells followed with a double to put runners at second and third with no outs. Mike Higgins popped out, but Bernhardt hit a two-run single to center to give the Avalanche a 5-2 lead.
Salem added two insurance runs in the fifth. Velasquez singled to right to start off the inning and two outs later, Grunewald walked. Wells then hit a pop up to third that Raul Rodarte dropped in foul territory for an error. Wells capitalized by hitting a two-run double to put the game out of reach.
Salem starter Doug Walls (5-4) went six innings and gave up two runs on three hits despite walking six to pick up the win.
