GRAND NATIONAL FIELD HITS THE ROAD (COURSE)

THE GRAND NATIONAL SERIES takes its show to network television today.

Phil Parsons led final qualifying Saturday for today's Lysol 200 at Watkins Glen International, the only road course event on the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series.

The event will be the 400th race in series history, and will mark the series debut on network TV. CBS will air the race. All previous NASCAR Grand National events on television have been on cable networks.

Parsons, who crashed in practice on Friday and did not make the field in the first round of qualifying, turned the 2.45-mile course at a speed of 112.464 mph, 16th fastest overall but only good enough for 26th starting spot. The top 25 were set in Friday's qualifying session.

Kelly Moore was second-fastest in the final session at 111.285 and will start 27th in a Ford. Doug Heveron, who turned a lap of 111.255, was third -fastest and will start 28th.

Terry Labonte, winner of two of the four NASCAR Grand National events held at Watkins Glen, including last year's race, won the pole Friday with a track-record speed of 115.309.

Mike McLaughlin will start second in a Chevrolet, followed by Chad Little in a Ford, Curtis Markham in a Pontiac and Butch Leitzinger in a Chevrolet.

Series point leader Johnny Benson starts seventh in a Chevrolet.
