AKERS WINS 1ST OF YEAR AT NEW RIVER

Mark Akers of Narrows led from start to finish in to win his first Limited Sportsman race of the season late Saturday night in the Dick Price/Holiday/Skyline Ford 200 at New River Valley Speedway in Radford.

Hank Turman of Indian Valley, Terry Lawson of Christiansburg and Robert Fain of Blacksburg finished 2-3-4, respectively.

Wayne Moore of Radford won the 25-lap Mini Stock race, his third victory this season. Ray Sowers of Floyd was second and Robert Cox of Roanoke finished third.

Tim Maiden of Salem won the 25-lap Modified Mini Stock race, his second victory of the season. Gene Duncan of Radford was second and K.J. Bishop of Riner third.

In other sports news in the region:

Saturday night's race at Franklin County Speedway was canceled because of rain. The Drummond Heating and Cooling/Rainbo Bread 300 will be run at a later date.

On July 1, all rainchecks from Saturday will be honored for the Nelson Ford/B-99.9 300.

Larry Bowles hit three home runs to power Rocky Mount Post 6 to a sweep of Patrick County Post 105 in a Blue Ridge American Legion baseball doubleheader Sunday in Stuart.

Bowles hit a three-run homer in the first game to spark Rocky Mount (5-0) to a 13-10 victory in a slugfest. Gray Hodges and Ashley Moore added three hits each for the visitors.

In the second game, Bowles hit two of Rocky Mount's five homers in a 16-5 rout.

Chris Taylor of Blacksburg placed fifth in race two of the Formula USA division of the WERA National Road Racing Championship motorcycle race in Grattan, Mich. Taylor rode a Yamaha 1000 on the two-mile course.

Fritz Kling of Lansing, Mich., won race one at 86.660 mph and race two at 86.772 mph on his Yamaha 1000. Each race was 12 laps.

Richard Eanes of Martinsville placed 10th in the United State Auto Club Glen Continental XII at Watkins Glen, N.Y. Eanes qualified seventh in his Van Diemen RF95.

Jeret Schroeder of Vineland, N.J., won the 40.8-mile, 12-lap race in his Swift DB-6.
