HOECHST-CELANESE UNION WORKERS APPROVE NEW 5-YEAR CONTRACT

Union workers at Hoechst-Celanese have agreed to a new five-year contract after working for almost two weeks on a day-to-day basis, union officials said.

The Amalagamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union voted to approve a new contract earlier this month, although union members at the 1,600-employee Narrows plant did not agree on some local issues until this weekend, officials said.

The contract increases wages by an average of 4 percent over the current average rate of $11.88 per hour; and boosts health care coverage and pension plan contributions.

Workers at the Narrows plant and another in Rock Hill, S.C., produce the fibers from which cigarette filters are made.
