CRASH KILLS WOMAN; HUSBAND CHARGED

A Williamsburg woman was killed early Monday in a crash on Interstate 81 in Salem when her husband lost control of the car.

It is unknown whether Beverly Bennett, 18, was wearing a seat belt when the car ran off the right side of the highway about 2 a.m.

Fate Dewaine Bennett, 18, was driving north on I-81 when the car ran into an embankment, hit two trees and overturned.

Beverly Bennett died at 3:09 a.m. at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

The couple's 3-month-old infant, who was in a car seat, was thrown from the car, according to Trooper K.C. Kozar. He said witnesses found the baby in the woods.

Kozar would not release the baby's name, but said the ``baby is doing OK'' according to hospital reports.

Part of the baby seat was still attached to the car, and Kozar said he suspects part of it must have traveled with the baby, partially protecting the child when it landed.

Kozar said Fate Bennett, who did not suffer major injuries, was charged with one count of reckless driving for failing to maintain control of his vehicle.

The couple was returning from their home state of Texas to Williamsburg where Bennett is stationed in the Navy.
