NRVS SCHEDULES MAKEUP RACES

New River Valley Speedway will hold twin 50-lap Late Model Stock Car races instead of 100-lap events starting Saturday, track promoter Ronny Snoddy announced Monday.

Twin 50s also are scheduled July 8 and Aug.5. These races will be for Mid-Atlantic NASCAR series points and are being run to make up for rainouts.

Starting positions for the two races will be determined by qualifying times. First-lap times will decide the starting lineup for the opener, with second-lap times setting the field for the second race. Drivers will be required to use the same set of tires for both races, Snoddy said.

This marks the first time since the track opened in 1988 that starting positions for twin LMSC races have been determined by times established each lap of qualifying runs.

Only one NRVS Late Model driver is in the top 50 of the NASCAR Winston Racing Series Mid-Atlantic points standings. This is because NRVS drivers have not run as many races as drivers at other regional speedways.

An open practice session from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday is open to the public. There will be no admission charge. Infield admission is $10, and a NASCAR license is required.

Jason Alexander, a former George Wythe High School standout, finished fourth in the 5,000-meter run and sixth in the 10,000 on Saturday at the U.S. Junior National Track and Field Championships in Walnut Creek, Calif.
