MAN HELD IN PULASKI DEATH

Town police have charged a Wytheville man in the May 28 stabbing death of Windle Jackson Edwards Jr., 31, of Draper.

Tony Wayne Covey, 26, was charged Friday, investigators said.

The fight that left Edwards dead appeared to be the result of a domestic dispute, police said earlier this month.

Edwards was found dead on Valley Street near the Pulaski Market just after 1 a.m. Others were injured during the altercation, including Covey, who was hospitalized in Roanoke for a stab wound and head trauma.

Police think Johnny Ray Pope, 23, of Pulaski, and his estranged wife both brought friends to a meeting they had arranged. There was a fight, involving at least one knife and a bat.

Pope and Terrance Wade Edwards, 29, of Dublin, were charged earlier with maliciously wounding Covey. Both were released on bond.

Covey also is charged with maliciously wounding Charles T. Crowder III. Crowder, 27, was stabbed in the abdomen.

Police also have charged David Eugene Covey, 24, of Pulaski, with maliciously wounding Windle Edwards. David Covey was treated at a hospital for a broken nose after the fight.

David Covey was released after posting a $10,000 bond. Tony Covey is being held in the Pulaski County Jail with no bond set. A Sept. 11 preliminary hearing has been scheduled.
