Fireworks to help disabled graduate

SHAWSVILLE - This year's July 4th fireworks celebration in Shawsville will commemorate the nation's birthday - and help raise money for a local resident who needs $2,000 for a dog to help with his muscular dystrophy.

Christopher Michael Keen, a 1995 graduate of Shawsville High School, was born with the disease and has been confined to a wheelchair since age 12. The dog, a specially trained Labrador retriever, will help him with simple tasks such as opening doors, answering telephones and picking up dropped objects. Keen plans to attend New River Community College this fall.

The Shawsville Ruritan Club will collect money at the celebration at Shawsville High School. The show starts at 7 p.m. and features bluegrass music. The fireworks, donated by Sisson & Ryan, a nearby quarry company, will begin at about 9:30 p.m. Celebrants are invited to bring picnics.
