CRESTAR ACQUIRES 6 MD. BRANCHES

Crestar Bank will take another step to the north when it acquires six Maryland branches from Chase Manhattan Bank with nearly $450 million in deposits and $260 million in loans.

The Richmond-based bank, which has assets of $14.4 billion, said it plans to buy Chase's branches in Rockville, Chevy Chase, Timonium, Annapolis, Pikesville and Baltimore. Terms were not disclosed.

The branches serve about 18,000 households. Crestar president James M. Wells III said the company is attracted to the Maryland market and its promise of growth.

Crestar announced in April its plans to buy Loyola Capital Corp., a Baltimore bank with 35 branches in Maryland.
