IN SERVICE

Seven local residents retired in recent months from the United States Army Research, Development and Acquisition Information Systems Activity (USARDAISA) in Radford.

Kenneth Anderson retired in April as a computer operator with more than 44 years of combined federal and military service. Anderson retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1972 after 22 years of active duty service. He joined the Postal Service and then transferred to the USARDAISA.

Anderson's retirement plans include becoming an American Kennel Club show judge. He lives in Radford with his wife, Doreen.

Franklin Gibson retired in April as a computer systems programmer after 36 years of government career with the Defense Mapping Agency in Washington. He severed three years wiuth the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stationed in Germany. Gibson lives in Christiansburg with his wife, Lou. His retirement plans include traveling, playing golf and spending time with family.

After 33 years of federal service, Jane Hurd retired as a computer programmer. Hurd started her government career in 1962 and entered the computer industry with a position at Celanese Corporation of America in Narrows. Hurd lives in Blacksburg with her husband, H.T. She plans to travel, garden and spend more time enjoying spectator sports.

James Miles retired in April as a computer systems programmer. He joined the U.S. Army in 1959 and began his career at USARDAISA in 1962 as an operations clerk. Miles and his wife, Louise, live in Tazwell. His plans are to travel, play golf, garden and do yard work during his retirement.

John Simpkins retired after 30 years of government service. He started his federal career in 1964, after serving in the U.S. Army for two years. He and his wife, Pat, live in Radford. His retirement plans include playing golf and travelling.

A computer programmer analyst, John Thomas retired after 30 years of government service. Thomas started his civilian career in 1961 as a analyst with the Central Intelligence Agency before transferring to the USARDAISA in 1964. He also served in the U.S. Army for three years. Thomas lives in Dublin with his wife, Brenda. His retirement plans are to relax, fish and pursue his hobbies.

William Wall II retired as chief of the Plans/Pro-grams/Policy, Acquisition, and Security Division. He started his 33 year federal service career in 1962 as a computer programmer. Wall and his wife live in Radford. His immediate plans include spending more time on his farm raising cattle and enjoying his Claytor Lake vacation cottage.

Navy Lt. John Harber of Radford recently completed a six-month overseas deployment with the Marine detachment assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Constellation. The tour included duty in the Persian Gulf near Iraq. Harber was one of more than 5,000 Marines and sailors aboard the ship, which completed a 45,240-mile voyage before returning to San Diego.

A 1981 graduate of Pulaski High School, Harber joined the Navy June 1981. He received his bachelor's degree in 1988 from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

Air Force Airman Michael Conner recently graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Conner also earned credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force. A 1991 graduate of Shawsville High School, he is the son of Kenneth and Martha Conner of Elliston.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class David Brockman of Christiansburg recently reported for duty aboard the USS submarine Oklahoma City, homeported in Norfolk. Brockman graduated from Christiansburg High School in 1993 and joined the Navy that summer. He is the son of Elaine Reese of Christiansburg.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Joshua Snapp recently graduated from Navy's Basic Nuclear Power School in Orlando, Fla. He is the son of John and Ann Snapp of Shawsville.

Air Force Airman Rhonda Ervine graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Ervin is a 1992 graduate of Christiansburg High School. She is the daughter of Stephen and Kathy Wright of Christiansburg.

Army Pvt. Steven Kokkinakos recently reported for duty at Fort Hood, Killeen, Texas. A cannon crewmember, Kokkinakos is the son of Susan Travel of Riner.
