BENNINGTON, Elsie Hale, 90, of Check, died Wednesday morning, June 28, 1995, in a Roanoke Hospital. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Christine and Lewis Angle, Check, Anna Ruth and John Harman, Copper Hill, Nancy and George Bandy Jr., Copper Hill; six grandchildren, Stephen Angle, Melvin Angle, Van Angle, Winona Baker, Noah Bandy and Andrew Bandy; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Nelson Hale of Check; one stepbrother, Irvin Cole, Pilot. BLANE, Marie Young, 79, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, June 27, 1995, at her home. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Canton, N.C., was a graduate of the University of North Ca rolina (Greensboro), a member of the Hidden Valley Country Club, and a former teacher. Surviving are her husband, Watkins J. (W.J.) Blane, Roanoke; four sons and spouses, W.J. Blane Jr., Atlanta, Ga., Robert E. and Pamela Blane, Roswell, Ga., James L. and Janet Blane, Charlotte, N.C., William Y. and Ann Blane, Atlanta, Ga.; ten grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at Oakey's South Chapel, 1 p.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Kenneth D. Amstutz and Dr. Daniel E. Scott officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Burial Park. COUNTS, Belva Louise, 83, of St. Paul, passed away Tuesday, June 27, 1995, in the Heritage Hall Health Care, Wise, Virginia. She was a retired media specialist at the Andrew Lewis High School in Salem, Virginia. She had come home to her beloved ""Marshall Retreat"" on Sandy Ridge near Coeburn, Virginia after having lived in Roanoke, Virginia. For many years after her retirement as an educator, Mrs. Counts served as President of Marshall Ladies-Junior Shoppes in Coeburn, Bristol and Marion, Virginia until the end of business in 1977. Mrs. Counts was the widow of Oren R. Counts who upon his death in 1969, was Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Roanoke County, Roanoke, Virginia. The two of them were innovative educators serving children throughout the state of Virginia in Roanoke County, Wise County, Dickenson County, Russell County, Fieldale and Hampton, Virginia. They began what may have been the first ""Hot Lunch Program"" in the rural south in Dickenson County at West Dante School during the ""Depression Years"" with the aid of parent volunteers. This was hailed in an educational magazine article several years later as a singular accomplishment in the Annals Education. Mrs. Coun ts was a graduate of Berea College and Appalachian State University. As a Historian of Note, Belva Marshall Counts has contributed facts and pictures to the New Wise County History. Her history of the Hillman family, Unto The Hills...some Hillmans and others listed in the Library of Congress Catalog are in its third printing. She has been a contributing writer of educational articles and researcher for other authors. Several organizations have benefitted from her leadership as officer and member. These include the National Genealogical Society, Southwest Virginia Historical Society, The Virginia Genealogical Society, The National Education Association, and The Virginia Education Association. Other contributions were as officer and member in The Colonial Dames, Daughters of American Revolution and Daughters of the Confederacy; and she served on the Board of Directors and was a member of the Grace House where she and her husband began their church membership. Mrs. Counts was one of eleven children of Andrew Wilson Marshall and Sarah Elizabeth Hillman Marshall. Surviving are two brothers, Ray W. Marshall of Bristol, Va., and Joe Marshall of Hereford, Texas; one sister, Charlotte M. Pardue of Charlottesville, Va.; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday in the St. Marks Episcopal Church, St. Paul, Va. with the Rev. Frances McCoy officiating. Burial will follow in the Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, Va. The family will receive friends Thursday evening 6 to 9 p.m. at the Sturgill Funeral Home, Coeburn. DICKERSON, Leland, 87, of Roanoke, formerly of Floyd County, died Tuesday, June 27, 1995, in Burrell Nursing Center. FLORA, Aaron Terrill, precious infant son of R. Terrill and Valerie Flora, born March 13, 1995, went to heaven on Tuesday, June 27, 1995. His passing was sudden and devastating to those who knew him and loved him. We shall always hold him in our hearts, if not in our arms. GILLMAN, Blanche Jarrett, 89 of Christiansburg, passed away Tuesday, June 27, 1995, at Radford Community Hospital. She was a retired telephone operators with C & P Telephone. Mrs. Gillman was a charter member of the Rogers Park Missionary Baptist Church in Rogers Park, kentucky and attended the New River Baptist Temple in Radford. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Gillman and one son, Billy Gillman. Survivors include two sons, Ronald Lee Gillman of Caldwell, Ohio, John Thomas Gillman of Radford; one daughter, Mary Katherine Staton of Christiansburg; one sister, Helen Joyner of Bluefield, W.Va.; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren. HICKMAN, Jesse David, 73, of Natural Bridge Station, died Sunday, June 25, 1995, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Salem, Va. Born in Rockbridge County April 16, 1922, he was the son of the late George Baxter Hickman and Ella Belle Tolley Hickman. Mr. Hickman was a member of the Beth Horon United Methodist Church, was a veteran of WW II, and was a retired weaver with the Burlington Industries with 44 years service. Surviving are his wife, Doris G. Hickman, Natural Bridge Station; daughter, Ginger Hammed, Manila Phillippines; two sisters, Minnie Shanks, Natural Bridge Station, and Della Thomas, Glasgow; two granddaughters, Kendra Whitaker, and Kari Hammed, both of Manassas. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, July 1, 1995, at 11 a.m. from the Harrison Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Edward F. Rigg officiating. Burial will foll ow in Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. HYLTON, Lillie Edwards, 78, of Meadows of Dan, died Wednesday, June 28, 1995, in Laurel Meadows Home. She was a former employee of United Elastic Corporation and retired from J. P. Stevens Corporation 1978. She was a member of Slate Mountain Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder. Surviving are her husband, J. Paul Hylton, Meadows of Dan; two daughters and one son-in-law, Alene Hall, Martinsville, Joyce and Fred Hubbard, Meadows of Dan; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lendell and Elree Craig, Meadows of Dan, J. W. and Diane Hylton, Salem; sister-in-law, Gay Edwards, Meadows of Dan; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. KEESLING, Cecil W., 80, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, June 27, 1995, in a Roanoke hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, John E. and Molly D. Keesling; a brother and sister, Donald D. Keesling and Dorothy K. Bryant. Mr. Keesling was a life insurance agent and owned and operated C.W. Keesling Insurance in Roanoke for many years. He was an army veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Post #3. Survivors include his wife of many years, Evelyn T. Keesling; and a daughter, Cecilia Keesling; a stepdaughter, Lucy Ann DeLong; a brother, John E. Keesling Jr.; Roanoke; and sisters, Virginia K. Yates, Roanoke; Hazel K. Bernard, Norfork; several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 30, 11 a.m . at the Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. Ira F. Tolliver officiating. KIRBY, Ruby Turner, 83, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, June 28, 1995. She retired as secretary at Burlington Elementary School and was a member of North Roanoke Baptist Church. She was the widow of Curtis Melvin Kirby Sr. Surviving are her sons, Curtis M. Kirby Jr., Raleigh, N.C., Thomas D. Kirby, Henderson, N.C.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Frank Turner, Greensboro, N.C., Charles Turner, Birmingham, Ala., J. Ray Turner, Bedford. MOYER, Helena Antionette, 33, of Roanoke, died Monday, June 26, 1995 at her home. Survivors include, one daughter, Gloria D. MYERS, James William, 75, of Route 1, Gretna, died Tuesday morning, June 27, 1995, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salem. He was born June 3, 1920, the son of the late McKinley Myers and the late Rosa Patrick Myers. His wife, Violet Carter Myers and their son, James Rogers Myers, also preceded him in death. He was a member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Gretna, and was a retired carpenter, last employed by F & B Construction Company in Roanoke. He is survived by four brothers, Charlie Myers of New York, John ``Bob"" Myers of Hurt, Ramsey Myers of Blairs, and Bennie Myers of Gretna; four sisters, Ethel Roach and Sarah Townes, both of Gretna, Novella Simms of New York, and Marie Mitchell of Callands; and one grandson, James Rogers Myers Jr. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday at 1 p.m. from the Mount Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. STEWART, Robert, 77, of Lexington/Rockbridge Baths, died Tuesday, June 27, 1995 in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born March 6, 1918 in Buffalo, N.Y., he was the son of the late William Murphy Stewart and Mary Easter Owens Stewart. Mr. Stewart was a member of Lexington Presbyterian Church, was a veteran of WW II serving in the U.S. Navy, was a retired Professor of Music for 34 years with the Washington & Lee University, and was a member of the American Composers Alliance, the American Federation of Musicians, Capitol Composers Alliance and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Surviving are wife, Margaret Brouwer Stewart, Rockbridge Baths; two sons, Robert Murphy Stewart, Harrisonburg, and Patrick Crumley Stewart, New Orleans, La. ; two stepsons, Kevin Smith Brouwer, Washington, D.C., and Greg ory Philip Brouwer, Los Angeles, Calif.; one brother, William A. TURNER, Kenneth Vernon, 75, of Pearisburg, died Wednesday, June 28, 1995 in Giles Memorial Hospital. Mr. Turner was a veteran of WW II serving in the U.S. Navy, and was a retired employee of the Hoechst-Celanese with 35 years of service. He was a member of the Rich Creek Church of God. He was a charter member of the Pearisburg Volunteer Fire Department. He was a former member of the Pearisburg Zoning Board. Mr. Turner was born in Raleigh County, W. Va. on June 6, 1920, and was the son of the late Tyler and Ruth Reynolds Turner. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Casey Turner of Pearisburg; one son, Kenneth V. Turner Jr. of Anderson, Ind.; one daughter, Alinda T. Uzel of King William, Va.; one brother, Julian P. Turner of Arlington, Va.; five sisters, Beulah Turner of Arlington, Va., Christine Leighton of Covington, Va., Faye Lawhorn of Charleston, W. WEAVER, Ernest A., 82, of Elliston, died Tuesday, June 27, 1995, in a Salem hospital. He served in the Navy in World War II and was awarded 11 major battle stars. He was retired from the V.A. Medical Center in Salem after 32 years of faithful service. He was a charter member of the Seneca Baptist Church. He served as trustee, deacon, and Sunday School teacher, and other offices of the church. He is survived by his wife, Beulah G. Weaver; sons and daughters-in-law, Rodney E. and Fredna Weaver, Steven A. and Carol Weaver; one granddaughter, Heather Ann Weaver; two grandsons, Todd E. Weaver, Tedd D. Born July 28, 1929 he was the son of the late Adam Joseph and Frances Emily Moylan Wernicke. He was retired from Gruman Aerospace, was a member of Mended Heart Roanoke Valley Ch. 144, Roanoke, Va. and a member of E.A.A., Ch. 646, Roanoke Valley. Worley Sr. She is survived by four daughters, Peggy Worley, Esther Steinmetz, Doris Bailey, Kitty Mills; one son, Boyd C. Worley Jr.; sister, Elizabeth Hildebrand; daughter-in-law, Mary T. Worley; 20 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren. Her remains rest at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Road, Richmond, Va. where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be held 12 noon Friday at the Bellwood Baptist Church. Graveside services will be held 12 noon Saturday at the Lithia Baptist Church Cemetery, Lithia, Va. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or Bellwood Baptist Church.
