RELIGION BRIEFS

ROANOKE VALLEY SOUTHERN BAPTISTS are raising funds to construct a new cottage for developmentally disabled women on the grounds of the Virginia Baptist Childrens' Home in Salem. The cottage, which will be across a road from the present house for male retarded adults, has received some funds but more are needed before construction begins. ROANOKE AREA MINISTRIES, an interfaith agency that helps with emergency needs, has received a $4,000 grant from Mazon, a national Jewish hunger relief organization. The money will be used for hot meals at RAM House day shelter.

MOSTLY MARCHES will be the theme of a free organ recital Sunday, 3 p.m., at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church, 402 Second St. The program will feature the host organist, Richard Cummins, and will include works from opera and symphonies as well as patriotic airs. Dress is informal.

SUMMER ENRICHMENT, a day camp for children living in Roanoke's West End, gets under way on July 5 at West End United Methodist Church. Sponsored for more than a decade by four inner city congregations, the camp is receiving support from two more churches this summer, Second Presbyterian and Christ Episcopal. The camp continues through July from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. It augments the 11-month education and recreation program of the ecumenical West End Center nearby.

FIRST CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN has approved the use of its chapel at 2001 Carroll Ave. N.W. for part-time use of Spirit of Life Full Gospel Fellowship Baptist Church. The Spirit of Life group is seeking permanent facilities. The Rev. David Miller, pastor, said the proposal is meant to encourage neighborhood cooperation between the white and black congregations.

KEITH HARTLESS, director of music at Melrose Baptist Church, is one of several Virginians who will leave July 7 for a week in the former Soviet nation of Latvia. They will work with Latvian Baptists in using a computer to publish the country's first denominational hymnal. The pilot project is sponsored by the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board.

WILLIAMSON ROAD CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN is sending seven youth of junior high age on a work camp July 5-9. The group, led by the Rev. David Wolfe,will join several other Brethren groups in painting and repairing homes in inner-city Virginia Beach.

VALLEY CHRISTIAN CENTER,4265 Cloverdale Road, is sponsoring a Children's Tent Crusade July 12-14. It will be in session nightly from 7 to 8:15. To register, call 977-2382.

THE REV. JAMES RIACH has left the pastorate of Covenant Presbyterian Church to become interim minister of a congregation in Polson, Mont., a part of a Flathead Indian reservation. The native of Scotland came to the Southwest Roanoke church 16 years ago after serving as a visiting minister at Fincastle Presbyterian.

COLONIAL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH congregation has approved a building campaign to raise $473,000 to enlarge the fellowship hall, administrative offices and music quarters in its building on Georgetown Road Southwest. The Rev. Dr. Michael Nevling, pastor, noted that overwhelming approval was given to the project which also includes adding a second parking lot. The church, which dates to 1957, was last enlarged 26 years ago.

THE REV. ED ANDERSON, associate minister for youth work at Virginia Heights Baptist Church for more than four years, will leave the staff July 23. Anderson is taking a new position at First Baptist Church in Washington, N.C.

CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH, 608 Campbell Ave. S.W. will sponsor a new informal Sunday morning service at 8:30 in July. The experimental worship style will not affect the usual 11 a.m. service, according to the Rev. Dennis Herman, pastor. Dress for the service may be informal and the congregation will be able to participate in the message, music and prayers. The service is open especially to those in the neighborhood and those who find an early morning worship time convenient because of work or recreation.

EUCHARIST IN THE GARDEN Wednesday night services are in progress at St. John's Episcopal Church at Elm Avenue and Jefferson Street. The informal Communion at 6 is followed by potluck picnic and Kerygma Bible classes until 8:30 p.m. The programs continue through Aug. 30.

A PATRIOTIC MUSICAL is scheduled Sunday at 11 a.m. at Cave Spring Baptist Church, 4873 Brambleton Ave. S.W. The program will be the only morning service . Optional lunch will be available on the grounds afterward. Participants are requested to wear red, white and blue.

ROANOKE'S TWO JEWISH CONGREGATIONS, Temple Emanuel and Beth Israel Synagogue, will begin joint Friday evening services on July 7 at 8:15. Sabbath Eve worship will be held on a rotating basis at the two houses of worship through Aug. 25. The first service will be at the temple on Brambleton Avenue at Persinger Road Southwest. BELMONT BAPTIST CHURCH has ordained the Rev. Judy Barger to the ministry in recognition of her 34 years of service as a director of sacred music groups in the Roanoke Valley. Barger retired on June 25 after nine years on the staff at Belmont.

KIM BRABHAM GEMBALA has left the program staff of Belmont Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) after more than five years as a worker with children, youth and choirs. She has not announced her plans.

WEST SIDE CHURCH OF CHRIST, 1705 Starview Drive in Salem, has planned a one-day vacation Bible school July 22 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. It will be open to children 3 through 10 with registration deadline July 3. Call 389-9139.

BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH,1601 Colorado St., Salem, has scheduled vacation Bible school July 10-14 . Classes will be provided for those 4 years old through adult level. For transportation in Salem call 389-2376.

THE REV. JONATHAN BENNETT associate pastor of First United Methodist Church in Salem for the past four years, has been transferred to Bridgewater United Methodist Church. He begins his new assignment Sunday and will be succeeded in Salem by the Rev. Alan D. Thorne of Newport in Giles County.
