QUALIFYING MEDAL GOES TO FLIPPEN

Jimmy Flippen Jr., whose father won the Virginia State Golf Association Amateur championship 37 years ago, shot a 5-under-par 67 Thursday to win the qualifying medal in the rain-delayed tournament at Wintergreen.

``I hit 15 greens,'' said the 22-year-old Flippen after touring the rain-soaked Wintergreen Resort's Stoney Creek course in 33-34. The course played to approximately 6,700 yards after VSGA officials were forced to move some of the tees to avoid standing water left by four days of rain.

Flippen, a Danville native, finished one shot better than Billy Judah, a 20-year-old junior college second-team All-American from Chesapeake. David Partridge of Richmond, the 1993 State Amateur champion, was next after a 69.

There was a five-way tie at 71 among two-time former champion Keith Decker of Fieldale, Adam Harrell of Roanoke, Jason Pool of Great Falls, Chad Mosely of Vienna and 1994 medalist Simon Cooke of Richmond.

Thirteen players finished in a tie for the last six spots in match play. They all shot 75 and will break the deadlock in a playoff beginning at 7 a.m. today. Two rounds of match play will follow.

Among those who failed to qualify were three-time former champion Tom McKnight of Galax, who shot 78; two-time former winner Wayne Jackson of Hampton; 1960 titlist Ned Baber of Roanoke, 78; and 1992 winner Allen Barber of Yorktown, who failed to turn in a card.
