INSURERS SUGGEST TAKING CARE IN FILING

To help speed processing of their claims, flood victims with insurance should photograph or videotape the condition of their homes before cleaning.

The National Association of Independent Insurers in Des Plaines, Ill., also suggests saving damaged furniture and other items for an adjuster to inspect.

The adjuster also will request a list of damaged items and receipts, if available, to establish the age and price of items needing replacement or repair.

Homeowners may collect bids from licensed contractors, but should not sign a contract or pay a deposit until after meeting with the adjuster, the association says.

Those with questions about flood insurance can call the Federal Insurance Administration at (800) 638-6620.
