Tabitha Waldron, 10, grabbed 3-year-old Becky Underwood, who was running between parked cars when she dashed in front of a westbound car on Tazewell Avenue. The car braked and swerved, according to witnesses, but both children were hit by the side of the vehicle. Neither was seriously injured.
Waldron and Underwood were taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital and later discharged. The hospital would not release details of injuries.
Lisa and Steven Underwood, Becky's aunt and uncle, witnessed the accident. They agreed the driver of the car tried to miss the children, but said more children will get hit because drivers do not abide by the 25 mph speed limit on Tazewell.
Roanoke Police Officer J.A. Fazio said no charges will be filed against the driver.
Two witnesses, according to Fazio, said the car was going the speed limit or slower.
