POLICE PROMOTIONS ANNOUNCED

Karen Price is Montgomery County Sheriff's Office's newest investigator, taking the vacancy created when Ron Hamlin was promoted to lieutenant of investigations in May.

Price, 32, joined the Sheriff's Office in 1993 and has been a patrol deputy since that time.

She started her law enforcement career in 1983 with the Pulaski Police Department, then joined the Blacksburg Police Department in 1985 for two years. She was an investigator with Frederick County from 1988 to 1990.

Hamlin, 45, was promoted to investigations lieutenant May 1, filling a vacancy created when O.P Ramsey became captain of law enforcement after the departure of Tom Roseberry.

Hamlin joined the department in 1981 as a patrol deputy. He was promoted to road sergeant in 1983 and became an investigator in 1992. Before joining the Sheriff's Office, he worked in law enforcement in West Virginia.

Other members of the Sheriff's Office investigative unit are: Bill Tolley, Barbara Bibb, Bob Fleet and Norman Croy.

\ Twenty-five people graduated as trained law enforcement officers June 23 from the New River Criminal Justice Training Academy in Pulaski County.

Class President was Steve Tolbert, a deputy with the Floyd County Sheriff's Office.

Other New River Valley graduates were:

From the Christiansburg Police Department: John R. Altizer, Terry C. Buchanan II, Mark A. Sisson and Alicia H. Smith.

From the Giles County Sheriff's Office: Alfred K. Anderson Jr. and Mark G. Skidmore.

From the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office: David W. Bolejack and Jeremy M. Williams.

From the Pulaski Police Department, Kirk A. Hendricks, Vanessa J. Hill and Todd A. Lytton.

From the Wythe County Sheriff's Office, Wesley G. Billings and Carl B. Vickers.

Also, James R. Whitaker Jr., Dublin Police Department; Blake E. Walkup, Glen Lyn Police Department; Pascal A. Osborne, Pulaski County Sheriff's Office.

David Bolejack and Jeremy Williams will be Montgomery County's last graduates of the New River police academy.

The Sheriff's Office has decided to go back to using Cardinal Criminal Justice Academy in Salem, after about a year's absence.

Sheriff Ken Phipps said his office signed up with New River because of its proximity and because many local law enforcement departments send their people there.

But the Salem academy is about as close, it's cheaper, and most importantly, the scheduling is more attractive, Phipps said.

Both academies generally offer two law enforcement schools and two correctional schools a year, plus other specialized training classes. But half of the New River academy's schools are taught at its Martinsville facility, while all of Cardinal's courses are in Salem, giving more chances to send new hires or transferred employees to training.

Phipps said the county paid $11,730 to New River for a year's membership and training. Cardinal will charge the county $10,500.

Law enforcement organizations are encouraged to send news of new hires, promotions, retirements or other milestones and accomplishments to Kathy Loan in care of this newspaper, P.O. Box 540, Christiansburg, Va., 24141. Items may be faxed to 381-1656.
