BRIEFLY PUT ...

A BILL in Congress to designate an additional 5.7 million acres of Utah land as wilderness is backed by 36 percent of the residents of that state, according to a recent poll. But 48 percent favor either a bill to add only 1.8 million acres, backed by the Utah delegation, or an amount even less.

Interesting, but ultimately not very relevant. None of the land in question is in private hands; it's all owned by the U.S. government. An American who happens to reside in Utah has no greater an ownership stake than one who happens to reside in California or New York or Southwest Virginia.
