SMART COMING TO FCS JULY 4

Franklin County Speedway will get SMART on July 4.

The Southern Modifieds Auto Racing Teams (SMART) Shootout, a 50-lap race, will headline the holiday racing event at the speedway in Callaway. Also on the program are double points races for all divisions, a 100-lap Late Model race, a $1,000 Anycar race and a fireworks display after the last race at about 9:30 p.m.

This will be the 17th consecutive year FCS has celebrated July 4 with a fireworks display.

``We'll have a jammed house if we get the weather to cooperate,'' FCS promoter Whitey Taylor said. ``People come over for this one event if they don't come to another. It's a ritual.''

In the SMART race, Bobby Hutchens of Winston-Salem, N.C., will be defending his series points lead. He is in first place with 375.

Area racers on the circuit are Kenny Minter of Martinsville, eighth in the points with 326, and Jay Foley of Stuart, 12th in points with 307.

``The modifieds are a breed all of their own,'' Taylor said. ``Franklin County Speedway was built for the modifieds when Ray Hendrick and all the old modifieds used to run here. The 22-degree banking on the turns and the 11-degree bankings on the straights really gets 'em going.''

The modifieds will return to Franklin County Speedway on Sept.23 for a 150-lapper.

Sen. Virgil Goode, R-Rocky Mount, will be the grand marshal for the event.

Tonight, FCS will play host to the Nelson Ford/B99 300, which also will feature double points races in all divisions.

Tickets are $5 for both events, and kids younger than 10 will be admitted free.

NEW RIVER SPEEDWAY: Should rain force postponement of tonight's racing schedule at New River Valley Speedway, then the ``Commonwealth Concrete Products 200'' will be held Sunday at 3 p.m.

If postponed Sunday, then races will be held Tuesday.

The race schedule will include twin 50-lap races for the Late Model Stock Cars with points in both events counting in the NASCAR Winston Racing Series Mid-Atlantic Region points race.

Also on the card are 35 laps for the Limited Sportsman along with 25 laps each for the Mod Mini, Mini and Pure Stock divisions.

The second annual fireworks show, presented by Zambelli Fireworks Company, will be held tonight. Should it rain today, the fireworks will be held July 8.

If necessary, Sunday's schedule will call for gates opening at 10 a.m., with practice at noon. The first race will be 3 p.m. Should a Tuesday make-up be necessary, gates would open the same as today, 1:30. Practice begins at 3:30. Time trials and racing action would be at 6 and 8 p.m.

Admission is $10 for adults and $1 for children 12 and under.
