RIVERDAWGS HOPE TO AVENGE LOSS TONIGHT

The Roanoke RiverDawgs, coming off a skid-ending victory last weekend, meet Hampton Roads in a U.S. Interregional Soccer League rematch tonight at 7:30 at Cave Spring Junior High field.

Hampton Roads (10-2) edged the 'Dawgs 2-1 in a June 18 game in Norfolk. After tonight's game, Roanoke (3-8) heads to Nashville for a Sunday afternoon game against the Metros, who lost in Roanoke 4-3 last weekend.

The Nashville trip starts a string in which Roanoke plays six of the last eight games of its inaugural season on the road.

Former James Madison University star Brent Bennett continues to lead the RiverDawgs in scoring. The forward from Trinidad and Tobago has eight goals and four assists for 20 points.

In other sports in the region:

Bobby Prince, who plays basketball for VMI and attended Lord Botetourt, was among 723 student-athletes named to the Southern Conference's academic honor roll. Prince was one of just 13 of the honorees to post a 4.0 GPA.

Today, the Atlantic 10 officially welcomes Virginia Tech, Dayton, Fordham, La Salle and Xavier to the 12-team league, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

The Atlantic 10 announced that Tech had accepted the membership invitation on Feb.9.
