Skaggs, who has won numerous awards in the gospel music industry, also will present his religious testimony as part of the special Fourth of July program. Music will be by Old Time Gospel Hour singers with a message by the Rev. Jerry Falwell, pastor of Thomas Road Church. Call 804-239-9281 for more information.

Anniversary

The congregation of Boones Mill United Methodist Church will mark its 100th Anniversary July 9 with the opening of the cornerstone placed on July 13, 1895. The ceremony will take place at 3 p.m., when ground also will be broken for a new church building expected to occupy the parking lot area of the present structure.

According to Frances Murray, historian of the church, the original frame building is still being used but needs replacement. It will be torn down when the new brick church is finished. Construction of the new church will begin as soon as financial arrangements are completed, she said.

Plans call for a $335,000 building with worship and fellowship areas and classrooms to accommodate the congregation of about 40 active members.

The Turner and Wright families have been represented in the church throughout the century and the homecoming service will be dedicated to them. Worship will begin at 11 a.m. and will be followed by potluck lunch, singing at 2 p.m. and a program focusing on past and future.
