Randall E. Carter, 48, was found by police in his Memorial Avenue home about 2:20 a.m. Carter was lying in a pool of blood and had been shot in the head, diaphragm and arm.
Maj. Jake Viar, of the Roanoke City police, said Saturday he had no comment about the progress of the investigation or possible suspects.
Carter's wife, Betty Hood Carter, told police she heard her husband arguing with a man and then heard four gunshots. She fled the home to call police from a neighbor's house.
Betty Carter told police she thought the man was trying to rob her husband.
Police reported finding no signs of forced entry at the Carters' home.
About the same time as the shooting, police were called to investigate a shooting victim left at Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley.
Michael James Houser, 24, was brought to the hospital by a man in a compact car who left the hospital immediately after delivering Houser.
Houser had been shot in the stomach and would not give police details about how he was shot. Police planned to question Houser after surgery for the wound.
