Interstate hearing set on hazardous cargoes

BLUEFIELD - Hazardous materials that now are trucked up U.S. 460 through Montgomery and Giles counties could be allowed to travel Interstate 77 under new state guidelines.

A public hearing about proposed changes to drop state restrictions on hauling hazardous materials through mountain tunnels on I-77 is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. July 12, in the Bluefield Rescue Squad Building on Virginia Avenue.

There will be no formal presentations on the changes proposed for Big Walker Mountain and East River Mountain tunnels, but citizens will be able to meet with Virginia Department of Transportation representatives.

Giles guild plans show and sale

NARROWS - The Giles Arts and Crafts Guild's 17th annual show and sale will be held at the Kiwanis Water Carnival, Narrows' annual Independence Day celebration on Tuesday. The show runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Narrows Town Park.

Ribbons and cash prizes will be awarded at the show. Exhibitor spaces are still available and may be reserved by calling Florine Ferrell at 726-2615 or Elva Davis at 726-2141.

WCC plans federal student-loan program

WYTHEVILLE - Wytheville Community College will start a federal direct-loan program for student loans in July.

The William D. Ford Direct Student Loan program will begin in response to mandates to reduce federal spending and is expected to save $4.3 billion in five years. Students will no longer have to go through a bank or other lender.

``We are very excited to be the only community college in Virginia to be participating in the Federal Direct Loan program,'' said Gail Catron, financial aid coordinator.

Bridge replacement is meeting topic

WYTHEVILLE - An information meeting about replacing a substandard bridge on U.S. 11 over Reed Creek will be held at 4:30 p.m. July 11 in the Wythe County School Board office.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is holding the meeting for the public to discuss proposed plans to replace the bridge, which has been identified as a historic structure. Written or oral comments will be taken at the meeting, and written comments may be submitted for up to 10 days afterward.

There will be no formal presentations at the meeting, but participants will be able to talk about the bridge plans individually with transportation representatives.

Ivanhoe Jubilee is under way

IVANHOE - The annual Ivanhoe Jubilee is under way in the community's Jubilee Park, with activities continuing for the next three days.

Performers starting at 4 p.m. today will be Carl Hamm, Ellie Scott, the King Chapel Singers, Guy Weeks Family, Buck McRoberts, the Thomas Family and Daisy Rudy. Face-painting will start at 6:30 p.m. Magician Mark Fuller will perform at 7 p.m., and the Singing Nippers and Cripple Creek Revue Bluegrass Band at 8 p.m.

The Countryland Express Cloggers of Galax will be on stage in the park at 7 p.m. Monday, followed by the Under the Gun Band at 8 p.m.

Independence Day activities Tuesday will start at 2 p.m. with an old-timers' softball game, tug-of-war, horseshoes and watermelon-eating contest. Face-painting will be offered and the Mountain Magic Cloggers under the direction of Carole Ann Shockley will perform both at 7 p.m.

The Krystal Klear Band will give a program at 8 p.m., and the crowning of Miss and Master Jubilee is set for 10 p.m. Further information is available by calling 699-1383.

Counselor named to state child board

WYTHEVILLE - Gail S. Catron, a licensed professional counselor, has been appointed to the board of directors of a new statewide child advocacy organization. She will serve a one-year term with the Action Alliance for Virginia's Children and Youth, a nonprofit advocacy organization that works to improve the quality of life for Virginia's children and families.
