WORKSHOPS TAKE A MUSICAL APPROACH TO ART

ArtVenture: A Children's Center, is hosting a series of workshops in conjunction with its current exhibit, ``In Harmony: Art About Music.''

The programs relate art to music through a series of musical interpretations and improvisations on children's drawings. Workshops, held from 12:30-1:30 p.m. for ages 5 to 9, unless noted, include:

``Coloring With the Kandinskys,'' led by the Kandinsky Trio, Wednesday, (ages 8-12);

``Musical Collage,'' led by artist Debbie Harris, July 15;

``Instruments As Sculpture,'' led by artist Ann Trinkle, July 20;

``The Development of Brass Instruments,'' led by The Brass Five, July 22 (ages 8-12);

``Musical Creations,'' led by artist Kathleen Lunsford, July 29;

``Tarantella Tambourines,'' led by artist Jennifer Shamy, Aug. 3;

``Musical Masks,'' led by artist Debbie Harris, Aug. 12;

``Music In Art,'' led by artist Rebecca McKeever, Aug. 17;

``Native American Rattles,'' led by artist Jennifer Shamy, Aug. 26;

``Tin Can Maracas,'' led by artist Jennifer Shamy, Aug. 31.

Artist Rebecca McKeever will lead a ``Wire Figures in Movement'' workshop Thursday from 12:30-1:30 p.m. for ages 5 to 9 in conjunction with the Science Museum of Western Virginia's SightSenseSound exhibit.

All programs are held at the ArtVenture Studio, 20 East Church Avenue (second floor), Roanoke. The studio is open Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, noon-3 p.m., during the summer.
