GROUP WANTS EX-DIRECTOR EXTRADITED

The Tidewater AIDS Crisis Taskforce wants its former director returned to Virginia to face forgery charges.

David W. Gillooly, 39, is being held without bond in the Brevard County Jail in Melbourne, Fla., on check forgery charges. He was picked up when he and his wife were returning to the United States from a cruise. A routine check by U.S. Customs agents turned up the four outstanding warrants.

Norfolk police in 1993 charged Gillooly with signing the names of board of trustee members on checks worth $6,500.

He disappeared later that year, but admitted in a letter that he had mismanaged funds. The organization's officials say the financial troubles that followed his departure showed that up to $60,000 was mismanaged during his tenure.

Bill Devine, the task force's legal adviser, said he spoke with Norfolk Commonwealth's Attorney Chuck Griffith to ask that the prosecutors help extradite Gillooly.

In addition to expense, ``One of the factors they also consider ... is importance to the community,'' Devine said. ``And this case sounds as if it is in that category.''

A decision on whether to pursue extradition is expected this week.
