ALDERMAN, John Perry, 59, a Hillsville attorney, died Saturday, July 1, 1995 at the Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax following a brief illness. Mr. Alderman joined his father, John Alderman, in the practice of law in Hillsville in 1958, following his graduation from the University of Virginia Law School. He had received his bachelors's degree from Emory & Henry College, graduating with honors in 1955. At UVA Mr. Alderman was selected for the Order of the Coif. He was elected Commonwealth's Attorney for Carroll County five consecutive times, first in 1963. He held that post until 1981, when President Reagan appointed him United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia. He served in the federal position until 1990 when he resigned and returned to Hillsville to resume the private practice of law. Mr. Alderman taught trial advocacy in programs at the University of Virginia for a number of years. He also taught courses in criminal justice at the Wytheville Community College. He served as a member of the Board of Visitors of Radford University, holding the position of Rector in 1980-81. He was a member of the Hillsville Presbyterian Church, and served it in many capacities over the years, including positions of Treasurer, Deacon, and Elder. Mr. Alderman was active in the Republican Party at local, state and national levels. He served for many years as Chairman of the party in Carroll County. A well-known genealogist and historian, he authored a number of books of family histories in Carroll and Grayson Counties. In addition, he was an authority on the Civil War. He wrote the history of the 29th Virginia Infantry, a Confederate regiment largely made up of men from Western Virginia, and contributed to many other Virginia regimental histories. He is survived by his widow, Marion Allen Alderman of Hillsville; his parents, John Alderman and Elizabeth Perry Alderman also of Hillsville; a son, John Owen Alderman, of Bloomington, Minnesota; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Greene Alderman McDaniel and Charles Russell McDaniel Jr., and a grandson, Conan Taylor McDaniel, all of Roanoke; a brother and sister-in-law, Taylor and Pamela McKinney Alderman of Virginia Beach; and a number of beloved aunts. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 4, at 11 a.m. at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home in Hillsville. Visiting hours will be held at the Hillsville Presbyterian Church in Hillsville on Monday, July 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Hillsville Presbyterian Church, the Carroll County Rescue Squad, Emory & Henry College, or a worthy cause of your choice.

ARNOLD, Edsel Cyril, 50, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, June 30, 1995. Funeral 10 a.m. Monday, Lotz Vinton Chapel.

BALL, Doris Hickman, 64, of Dahlgren, died Friday, June 30, 1995 in a Fredericksburg hospital. She is the wife of Elvin C. Ball. She was born September 12, 1931 in Roanoke to the predeceased William O. Hickman Sr. and Hattie Saunders Hickman. Also precededing her in death are, one brother, William O. Hickman Jr. and one sister, Helen Hickman. In addition to her husband she is also surviv ed by one son, Bryan K. Ball and wife Florence; two granddaughters, Sydney and Courtney Ball all of Dahlgren; one sister, Velma Martin Leonard and husband William both of Roanoke; six sisters-in-laws; a host of nephews, nieces and other relatives and countless friends. She was a member of Grants Hill Baptist Church of Leesville where she taught Bible School and was co-director with her husband of the youth choir. She was a former member of Mt. Zion AME Church, Roanoke. She was a 1953 graduate of Lucy Addison High School, Roanoke and also a 1957 graduate of Virginia State College, Petersburg. She retired from the King George Co. Elementary School after 32 years of teaching elementary education. For her outstanding contributions to her profession during her career she was named to the Who's Who Among American Teachers by the NEA. She was also honored the Teacher of the Year Award since her retirement. She was the president of the local AARP. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 6, 1995 in the Grants Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Fox officiating. Arrangements by Lewis Funeral Home, Fredericksburg.

BRITTON, Franklin R. Sr., 60, of Brookneal, departed this life, Saturday, July 1, 1995 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the son of Andrew L. Britton Sr., and the late Nellie Armstead Britton. He leaves to cherish his memories, his father and stepmother, Virginia; his wife, Patricia; five sons, Donald, Kevin, Franklin Jr., Andre, and Jeffrey Britton; and one devoted daughter, Deborah Mitchell (Warren), of the Washington, D.C. area; thirteen grandchildren; one brother, Andrew Britton Jr. (Winifred), Dayton, Ohio; three sisters, Rachel Yuille (Mural), Roanoke, Doris Tweedy (Henry) and Betty Kain (Ferdinand), Lynchburg; one stepsister, Elizabeth Poindexter; and one stepbrother, Raymond Logan, Nathalie. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 5, 1995 at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, Brookneal, Va. the Rev. L. S. Otey officiating. CARTER, Randall Eugene, 48, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, July 1, 1995. He is survived by his wife, Betty Hood Carter; son, Tony Carter; mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Carter; sisters and brother-in-law, Darlene and Danny Clark, and Joyce Carter; brother, Barry W. Carter all of Roanoke; one uncle, three aunts, several nephews and nieces and several great-nephews and great-nieces. COCKERHAM, Nora Lee Brown, 84, of Rt. 3, Galax, died Saturday, July 1, 1995 at Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax. Mrs. Cockerham and her late husband owned and operated a store in the Oakland community for twenty eight years. Also, as a former emloyee of Horton's Supermarket for twenty five years, she was affectionately known as ``Granny."" She was a member of the Mt. Pisgah Church of Christ, Galax. Mrs. Cockerham was preceded in death by her husband, Fred T. Cockerham. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Betty Jewel and Junior Patton of Galax; sisters and brothers-in-law, Stella and Glen Diamond of Galax and Opal an d Mitchell Hawks of Lowgap, N.C.; sister, Hazel Jacobs of Galax; brother, Sam Brown of Galax; sisters-in-law, Amanda Brown of Gainsville, Fla. and Lillian Brown of Ft. DAVIS, Anna Mae, 82, of Roanoke, died Saturday, July 1, 1995. ELLER, Lillian Kathleen Goode, 87, of Salem, died Saturday, July 1, 1995 at her home. She is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Nellie E. and Wayne O. Nienke, Roanoke, and Dorothy Clay Eller, Salem; brother and sister-in-law, George K. and Polly Goode, Salem; two grandchildren and spouses, Rev. Kenneth Wayne and Beth Nienke, Salem, and Kathleen N. and James C. Laine, Scottsburg, Va.; two great-grandchildren, Christopher Wayne Nienke, and Rebekah Elizabeth Nienke. EVANS, David E., 50, of Roanoke, died Saturday, July 1, 1995 in a local hospital. Mr. Evans was a Senior Marketing Specialist with V.E.P., Inc. and a member of Rosalind Hills Baptist Church. Surviving is his wife, Patricia Deal Evans; sons, Cory and Erik, all of the home; mother, Juanita H . Evans, Dublin; brothers and their wives, Jerry and Jean Evans, Dublin, Sam and Jean Evans, Leesville; sisters and their husbands, Dinah and Roger Taylor, Lebanon; Kaye and Richard Powell, Eden, N.C.; thirteen nieces and nephews. JACKSON, David Cassell, (""Bud""), 83, of Marion, died Saturday, July 1, 1995, at the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie, Va. He was retired from Bonham Brothers Inc., and was a member of the Seven Mile Ford United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elsie Atwell Jackson, Marion; two sons and daughters-in-law, David R. and Eleanor Jackson, Raleigh, N.C., and Ralph and Cathy Jackson, Seven Mile Ford; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lee and James Morris, Roanoke; daughter, Jane Jackson, Charleston, S.C.; brother, Rush Jackson, Wytheville; five grandchildren, Angelia Clary, Tonya Stump, David Jackson, Mark Jackson, and Beth Hoff; two great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 4, 1995 at the Seven Mile Ford United Methodi st Church with burial to follow in the Middlefork Cemetery. MAYS, Louise A., of Troutville, died Saturday, July 1, 1995 at her home. She was a life member of First Wesleyan Church. She is survived by her brother, Raleigh A. MILLER, Katye Wray, 85, of Charlottesville, formerly of Roanoke, died Friday, June 30, 1995 at a local nursing home. She was born June 2, 1910 in Christiansburg, daughter of the late James Crockett Brown and Henrietta Moore Brown. She was the wife of the late Sheffey Guy Miller. Mrs. Miller was a graduate of James Madison University where she served on the faculty. She also taught in the Charlottesville Public School System. SHe was a member of the Wednesday Evening Music Club, the Eta Kappa Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi Sorority and was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She is survived by a daughter Martha Ann Miller, Colorado Springs, Colorado. A graveside funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 3, 1995 at Evergreen Memorial Park in Roanoke. The Rev. SCHWARZWALDER, Emily Gills, of Roanoke, died Saturday, July 1, 1995. She was the founder of the first Telephone Answering Service in Roanoke. She began the service in 1950 and continued as owner and operator until her retirement in 1980. She is survived by her husband, Richard Schwarzwalder of Roanoke; brothers-in-law, John H. Schwarzwalder of Roanoke, Robert Schwarzwalder of Slidell, La., and Bernard J. Parker of Newnan, Ga.; niece, Nina G. Fleming and husband Mike; nephews, George W. Gills III and wife Sharon, Daniel C. Gills and wife Margaret, Gary C. Gills; great-nieces, Kimberly and Erin Gills; great-nephews, Daniel and Jamie Gills.
