Police gave this account of what happened:
The woman was using a pay telephone on the City Market about 5 p.m. to call her husband for a ride home. A man standing nearby offered her a ride, telling her he was "nice and she should not worry," according to a news release from the Roanoke Police Department. She accepted the ride.
The man drove the woman north on Williamson Road, past her residence. He drove behind a Williamson Road business and sexually assaulted her. After the attack, he drove the woman near her home and allowed her to get out.
