SMITH, William Calvin, 67, of Rocky Mount, died Saturday, July 1, 1995 at Franklin Memorial Hospital, Rocky Mount. Born April 22, 1928, he was the son of the late Sam H. and Betty Tosh Smith. Surviving are four brothers, Ruben, Julian and Allison Smith, Rocky Mount, and Lacie Smith, Redwood; two sisters, Cora Hodges, Hodgesville, and Doris Perdue, Rocky Mount; a special niece, Frances Hopkins, Rocky Mount; and several other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 6, 1995 at Lynch Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. William Pugh officiating. Burial will follow in Franklin Memorial Park, Rocky Mount. NOVAK, James Neil, 25, of Rt. 7, Box 74 B, Lynchburg, died Sunday, July 2, 1995 at the Bedford County Hospital. Mr. Novak is the son of Neil Edward and Dorothy McFaden Novak. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Berkley Novak; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. McFaden Sr.; and his paternal grandmother, Ruby T. Novak, all of Lynchburg. Mr. Novak was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, John Novak, MD. He is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors at Whitten Timberlake Chapel on Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times at their residence. BOROJEVIC, Marjana, 17, of Blacksburg, our beautiful joy, departed from us to be with the saints in Heaven, Sunday, July 2, 1995, eight days after her seventeenth birthday. She achieved many things in her short life, but most of all she touched so many other people and filled them with joy, happiness and exaltation for life. She will keep living in our hearts. Those who hold her dearest in their hearts with her everlasting love, Mama, Tata, and brother, Misha, grandparents, aunt, and uncle. COCKERHAM, Nora Lee Brown, 84, of Rt. 3, Galax, died Saturday, July 1, 1995 at Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax. Mrs. Cockerham and her late husband owned and operated a store in the Oakland community for twenty eight years. Also, as a former emloyee of Horton's Supermarket for twenty five years, she was affectionately known as ``Granny."" She was a member of the Mt. Pisgah Church of Christ, Galax. Mrs. Cockerham was preceded in death by her husband, Fred T. Cockerham, infant daughter, Frances Lee Cockerham. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Betty Jewel and Junior Patton of Galax; sisters and brot hers-in-law, Stella and Glen Diamond of Galax and Opal and Mitchell Hawks of Lowgap, N.C.; sister, Hazel Jacobs of Galax; brother, Sam Brown of Galax; sisters-in-law, Amanda Brown of Gainsville, Fla. and Lillian Brown of Ft. Gay, W.Va.; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Gregory and Mary Patton; great-grandson, Christopher Patton of Galax; several nieces and nephews. COLEMAN, Jerry Roger, 47, of Salem, died Monday, July 3, 1995. He was born in West Virginia. He was a retired Air Force Tech Sergeant, with 2 2 years of service. He served during the Vietnam Conflict. He was a life member of the VFW and a member of the N.C.O.A. After his retirement, he worked part time as a driver for Salem Taxi. Survivors include his wife, Robin Denise Groves Coleman; a son and daughter-in-law, James M. and Chastity A. Coleman, Roanoke; parents, James Coleman Jr. and Eunice Downs Coleman, Salem; grandson, Anthony J. Coleman; sister and brother-in-law, Meryleen C. and Noah Tickle; many nieces and nephews and good friends. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel, Salem, with the Rev. Eddie Kendall and the Rev. Burell Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park with military honors. DAVIS, Neoma Crotts, 85, of Salem, passed away Sunday, July 2, 1995. HAMMERSTROM, Alfred Nelson, 80, of Ro anoke, died Sunday, July 2, 1995. He was a native of Jamestown, New York, and formerly a resident of Schenectady, N.Y. He retired from the General Electric Company in 1977 after 38 years, having served as manager of Labor Relations. He was a magna cum laude graduate of King College, Bristol, Tenn. and served on the Schenectady School Board, the Roanoke Catholic School Board, the Catholic Historical Society, and was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Junior Achievement of the Roanoke Valley. He was past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus in Schenectady and was an active member of St. Gerard's Catholic Church, Roanoke. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Callahan; Hammerstrom and a brother, Arthur Hammerstrom of Toledo, Ohio. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Mary Hammerstrom Allen and James Allen, Roanoke, Arthur James Hammerstrom, Charlotte, N.C., Richard Joseph Hammerstrom, Collinsville, Va., Margaret Hammerstrom Swinton and Andrew Swinton, Potomac, Md., Alfred Paul Hammerstrom, Roanoke, and James Samuel and Robin Haldiman Hammerstrom, Roanoke; two brothers, Sam Hammerstrom, Camp Verde, Ariz., and Richard Hammerstrom, Melbourne, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, Christine Hammerstrom Hall, Jeff Allen, Maribeth Allen, Catherine Hammerstrom, Deidra Walker, Andrea Hammerstrom, Sarah Swinton, Joseph Hammerstrom, Meg Hammerstrom and Marcus Hammerstrom; and beloved friend Mary Surkamer. Mrs. Sadler was born at Natural Bridge Station on August 26, 1915, and was a daughter of the late Isaac and Mattie Brookman Johnson. She was retired from Roller Floral Co. with over 35 years. She was a member of the Pearisburg Baptist Church. She is survived by husband, Bascom Sadler, Staffordsville; two sisters, Melissa Austin, Buchanan, Clemmie Branch, Natural Bridge Station. SCHWARZWALDER, Emily Gills, of Roanoke, died Saturday, July 1, 1995. She was the founder of the first Telephone Answering Service in Roanoke. She began the service in 1950 and continued as owner and operator until her retirement in 1980. She is survived by her husband, Richard Schwarzwalder of Roanoke; brothers-in-law, John H. Schwarzwalder of Roanoke, Robert Schwarzwalder of Slidell, La., and Bernard J. Parker of Newnan, Ga.; niece, Nina G. Fleming and husband, Mike; nephews, George W. Gills III and wife, Sharon, Daniel C. Gills and wife, Margaret, Gary C. Gills; great-nieces, Kimberly and Erin Gills; great-nephews, Daniel and Jamie Gills. TRAIL, Irvin Hayden, (""Pete""), 62, of Salem, died Sunday, July 2, 1995 in a Salem hospital. He was retired from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. He is survived by his wife, Janet Faye Trail; a daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda Lynn and Ian Balmer, Fayetteville, Ark.; two sisters, Francis Beckner, Roanoke, Dorothy Harrison, Pulaski; two grandchildren, Jordan Balmer, Dylan Balmer; a special devoted cousin, Fred Walters, Pulaski; four nieces; three nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 5, 1995, at 12 noon at Lotz Salem Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Copper officiating. Graveside services will be held 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, at the Pickett Cemetery, Carroll County, with the Rev. Tommy Barnes officiating. VIARS, Robert Leonard, 41, of Meadow Dr., Horseheads, N.Y., and formerly of Radford, Va., died very unexpectedly on Friday June 30, 1995 as a result of an accident in his home. He was born November 1, 1953 in Draper, Va. Mr. Viars was employed by Claude Cain Construction in Radford, Va. After relocationg to Horseheads in 1987, h e was employed as a painter for Hardinge Brothers Inc., and attended Bible Baptist Church in Horseheads. He is pre-deceased by his mother, Lena E. (Ayers) Viars in 1976, and brother, Mark Jeffrey Viars in 1994. His surviving family includes his loving wife, Deborah (Hills) who together on June 12, 1995 recently celebrated 19 years in marriage. Also surviving are his daughter, Shanyn Viars; and son, Jeremy Viars, both of the home; sisters, Elaine (David) Wright, Pulaski, Bonita (Andrew) Henley, Pulaski, Donna Quesenberry, Radford, Betty (Joel) Davis, Pulaski, and Patty (Gerald) Lyons, Pulaski;In-laws, Ronald and Vivian Hills, Horseheads, N.Y.; grandmothers, Sarah Benjamin, Bellmont, N.Y., and Frances Hills, Friendship, N.Y.; several nieces, nephews, and great-nephews. Outside of the devotion to his wife and children, Leonard was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. A ""Jack-Of-All-Trades"", there was no task that appeared to be to large.
