VENTURE OUT A GOOD SOURCE FOR SUMMER ACTIVITIES

Summers are nice times to get out and enjoy the New River Valley and the surrounding area. The Venture Out program at Virginia Tech is offering several outdoor trips this summer to give people a chance to do just that.

The weekend trips include white-water rafting, horseback riding, caving and canoeing - both of the flat water and water water variety.

The trips include transportation and equipment as well as most meals for participants. The prices are low because of the nonprofit status of the organization. And these trips are open to both students and nonstudents.

For information, stop by the Venture Out office at 117B Squires Student Center on the Tech campus in Blacksburg. Or call MOLLY LUCIER at 231-3750 between 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

FISHING REPORT: Nobody caught "Sly Sam" but there were still seven winners in the 10th Annual AM 1260 WNNI/Claytor Lake State Park Fishing Tournament.

In the youth division, JOHN KESSINGER of Riner won the catfish/sunfish division while JONATHAN SIMMONS of Blacksburg won the largemouth/smallmouth bass division.

Adult winners were ANN CRAWFORD of Christiansburg in smallmouth bass; DANIEL STURGILL of Wytheville in crappy; SUSAN MILLER of Pilot in sunfish; KEVIN BOWER of Dublin in catfish; and CHARLES SUTPHIN of Draper in largemouth bass.

Had any of the nearly 200 contestants caught Sly Sam, a specially tagged bass, during the contest, he or she would have won a $5,000 prize. Whoever captures the bass and brings him alive to the radio station office (7080 Lee Highway in Radford) between now and Labor Day will receive a consolation prize.

SOFTBALL STANDOUTS: The only unbeaten softball teams in Christiansburg have opened big leads in their respective leagues.

In the Men's League, Southern Classic Auto Wash (9-0) edged second-place Harmon's Chevron 5-3. It was the second time Southern (9-0) topped Harmon's (7-2).

In the Church League, Brethren/Mennonite (8-0) remained perfect with wins over Presbyterian, 9-4, and New Life Foursquare 10-6. Abundant Life (5-2) and St. Paul II (5-2) are tied for second, 21/2 games back.

BATTED BALL REPORT: The Pulaski County Sox are swinging big bats and are 11-2 as a result. In 11 games played (the Sox have two forfeit wins), the Sox are batting .365 with 102 runs and 94 stolen bases.

CORY NEWMAN is hitting .500 and has an on-base percentage (OBP) of .684. ZACK LINKOUS is just behind in batting average at .474 but his OBP is a phenomenal .700. Other big bats include NICK YATES at .440, BRAD ANDERSON at .391 and RANDY QUEEN at .368.

Yates has scored a team-high 18 runs while Linkous has crossed home plate 16 times. Anderson and Linkous each have 11 runs batted in. And Yates has stolen 16 bases while Linkous has 14 steals.

CHRIS DALTON, Linkous and Anderson each have two pitching wins.

The Sox have taken two games from Speedway, two from Fort Chiswell, two-of-three from Radford, two from the Christiansburg Bees and have split two with the Christiansburg A's.

The team is coached by BILL CHRISLEY and TONY POWELL.
