NRCC SHORT-STORY CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED

New River Community College has announced the winners of its Senior Citizen Short Story Contest. They are:

Ruth Leftwich Harmon, Christiansburg, for "An Appalachian Escapade."

Beatrice W. King, Christiansburg, for "That Cupp Bunch."

Lila Lane, Blacksburg, for "Wifely Duties."

Eva S. Rogers, Pulaski, for "The Horse."

Mrs. L.E. Shaw and Mrs. George Davis for "A Talky Story - Zita and the Fairies."

Edith C. White, Dublin, for "Ode to the Senior Citizen"

Debbie Douthat coordinates activities for seniors at the college. "They have so much talent," she said. To drum up interest - and submittals - Douthat said she visited various gatherings for seniors. At least one of the winners had attended a creative writing class at New River this spring.

A panel of college faculty and staff members judged the entries.

Rogers, Harmon and White attended the recent awards ceremony. All winners got a plaque and a booklet of the stories submitted for the competition, which will become an annual event. The school some three dozen entries.

Entries for the New River Community College's poetry contest are due by July 31.

\ SENIOR GATHERINGS

Today's the last day to reserve a spot for Tuesday's area-wide Retired and Senior Volunteer Program picnic at Bisset Park, Radford, shelter 1. It starts at 11 a.m. Lunch is provided. All RSVP members are welcome. Call 382-5775.

The Senior Seminar and Discussion Group meets Thursday, Blacksburg Community Center, 725 Patrick Henry Drive. Don Anderson of Montgomery County Social Services discusses how the welfare system works. Friday, 1 p.m., the American Association of Retired Persons Pearisburg chapter meets, Giles County Senior Center, 1320 Wenonah Ave.

Tuesday, 7 p.m., the Roanoke Valley Chorus of Sweet Adelines International sings at The Oaks, Richfield Retirement Community, 3615 W. Main St., Salem (exit 137 off Interstate 81). It's free. Refreshments follow. Joan Price, 380-6537.

Saturday, travel to Chateau Morrisette for the '95 Black Dog jazz concert. The Swamp Cats perform. $12 includes transportation and admission. The van leaves at 10:30 a.m.

Signup is underway for the AARP "55 Alive" mature driver refresher class July 24-25, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. It's $8. Deadline to register is July 20, and space is limited.

Register by Friday for the coffee-brunch get together Monday, 10 a.m.-noon. Free pastries, fruit, coffee and juice.

Register by Friday for the trip July 12 to Mercer Mall, W.Va. Transportation is free and leaves the center at 9 a.m. and returns at 2:45 p.m. Lunch is on your own.

Register by Monday for the trip July 17 to visit Explore Park, Roanoke. Travelers should pack a lunch. Free transportation leaves the center at 9 a.m. and returns at 4 p.m. Park admission is $4.

Saturday, travel to the Salem Fair. Vans leave the Courthouse parking lot at 10:30 a.m. Lunch is on your at K&W cafeteria. Fair admission is free. Reservations required.

Monday, 9 a.m., the quilters begin the RSVP quilt at the annex.

Monday, 2 p.m., the Shawsville group visits Meadowbrook Nursing Home for a birthday party.

Seniors swim for free every day, 11-11:45 a.m., weather permitting, in the Pearisburg town pool.

During July, the swim therapy program meets Mondays and Thursdays. Transportation leaves the center at 1:15 p.m. for the Blacksburg Aquatic Center.

Bible Study is Tuesdays, 1-2 p.m.

Legal Aid this month is Tuesday, July 11, 2-4:30 p.m. Call (800) 468-1366 for an appointment.

The nutrition program is Thursdays, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Number 99: Ruby Mae Myers of Radford turned 99 on June 30. Family and friends held a gala birthday celebration last weekend at Central United Methodist Church, where she's a member.

Social Security Administration: A representative visits the Christiansburg National Guard Armory, College and Depot streets, Thursday, and the Radford Senior Center, 27 First St., Tuesday, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. (800) 772-1213.

Beginning Weight Training: For those 55 and older, basic weight training concepts using Nautilus and other equipment is Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 11-27, 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m., Fitness Connection, 1100 N. Main St., Blacksburg. Free for Fitness Connection members; $15 for non-members. 953-1044.

Ms. Virginia Senior Citizen: Registration ends July 15 (that's only a week from Saturday) for the third annual pageant set for Aug. 24-26 in Roanoke, and contestants from the New River Valley are welcome. Dotty Talbott has details at 674-5534.

Senior Athletes of Montgomery County: Donations of 100-percent cotton material are needed for a quilt fund-raising project. Material may be left at the Christiansburg Senior Center, 655 Montgomery St., Cambria.

Senior Poetry Contest: The entry dealine is July 31 for New River Community College's 17th annual poetry contest for seniors age 60 and older. To be eligible, poems must be original, fewer than 60 lines, and never before published, and participants may submit up to three. Submittals go to: Poetry, Arts and Sciences Division, New River Community College, P.O. Box 1127, Dublin, Va. 24084.
