ROANOKE - Virginia Tech's Division of Continuing Education in Roanoke has organized a two-day professional development workshop at the Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center for sign-language interpreters .
Miss America 1995, Heather Whitestone, will kick off the workshop Thursday at a banquet. Whitestone will speak at 6 p.m. at Hotel Roanoke.
Whitestone lost her hearing when she was 18 months old and learned to read lips and to speak. She credits early detection of her hearing loss with allowing her to achieve many goals, including being the first deaf Miss America. Since February, she has been campaigning for early detection of hearing loss in infants and young children.
The banquet is open to the public. Tickets are $30 per person and sponsor tables are available for $500, which includes dinner for eight, a listing in the program and an opportunity to meet and be photographed with Miss America following the program.
The Roanoke Valley Speech and Hearing Center will help sponsor the banquet. Connie Meck, program director for Tech's Division of Continuing Education, organized the workshop with grant funds from the Virginia Department of Education.
To purchase tickets, call Meck at 703-857-6055.
