ROANOKE AAU TEAM ADVANCES

The Roanoke Hawks beat Akron (Ohio) 98-56 on Thursday in an AAU boys' basketball national tournament in Kingsport, Tenn.

Devon Battle had 22 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Hawks. Jaron McCadden had 15 points and eight rebounds, and Leander Preston scored 11 points for Roanoke, which finished 2-1 in pool play.

The Hawks received a forfeit victory from a Connecticut team and lost 66-65 to Lexington, Ky.

The Hawks begin the elimination round today when they play Shreveport, La., at 4 p.m. at Sullivan North High School.

In other sports news in the region:

nRocky Mount Post 6 and Martinsville Post 42 split a twi-night doubleheader Monday in Blue Ridge American Legion baseball in Martinsville.

Larry Bowles had three hits for Rocky Mount in the first game, but Martinsville prevailed 6-3 to hand Post 6 its first loss of the season. In the nightcap, Rocky Mount (7-1) scored seven runs in the fifth inning and four in the sixth to earn an 11-3 victory.
