Woman's death scares neighbors

MANASSAS - The slaying of a 25-year-old woman just two weeks after a teen-ager on the same block escaped a would-be abductor has frightened residents of an otherwise quiet Manassas neighborhood.

Lorann Marie Cox, 25, was found dead Monday in her townhouse in the Sudley Manor neighborhood. Her 3-year-old son was unharmed.

Police said there was no obvious cause of death. They would not say if there were signs of a struggle in Cox's home.

The slaying occurred in the same block where a 17-year-old woman was rescued by her dog from a would-be abductor June 22. She was taking out her trash when a man came up from behind and began to drag her across her yard.

She screamed for her dog, a Rottweiler, which jumped through a screen door and attacked the man. He fled with several severe bite wounds.

Fumes released at Hopewell plant

HOPEWELL - A chemical plant released nearly 1,000 pounds of ammonia into the atmosphere when a loss of power shut down facilities during a thunderstorm, officials said.

At least two people suffered respiratory problems after the ammonia was released Tuesday at the Allied Signal Inc. plant in Hopewell, fire officials said. Both were treated at the scene and required no hospitalization.

The plant also released a cloud of sulfur dioxide Tuesday afternoon, officials said. It dissipated within the plant site.

Murder suspect caught by rookie

NORFOLK - A man wanted on murder charges was caught by a rookie state trooper when he stopped him for speeding in Chesapeake.

Jamel Andre Lee, 21, is charged with killing Anthony W. Carr on June 22, 1993. He also is charged with using a firearm in a felony and shooting into an occupied dwelling.

Carr, 25, was hit in the back of the head when several shots were fired into his home. He died the next day at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Trooper Philip King, a former Hampton police officer who graduated from the State Police Academy in April, said he stopped Lee on Tuesday after he clocked him driving 77 mph in a 55 mph zone at about 9:30 a.m.

Lee offered no resistance, King said, and was so blase when told he would be charged with reckless driving that the trooper's interest was aroused.

``He was very calm, very relaxed,'' King said. ``He said he was on his way home from work, and he was tired. He said, `Just give me the ticket so I can get home and get to bed.' ''

A check of Lee's driver's license number revealed the charges, so King turned Lee over to Norfolk police.
