EX-KNIGHT WRESTLERS NOW COACHES

MANY TIMESLAND AREA coaches in non-revenue sports are moving to new schools this year.

Two former wrestlers from Cave Spring will be head coaches in the Roanoke County system next year.

Raymond Broughman, who graduated in 1977 and went on to a wrestling career at William and Mary, replaces Steve Spangler at Cave Spring. Adam Williams, an outstanding Knight wrestler in 1991, takes over at William Byrd for Barry Trent.

Though all the county coaching changes involve non-revenue sports, some of the biggest names in Timesland made moves.

Penny Williams, one of Timesland's most successful volleyball coaches, moves from Patrick Henry in Roanoke City to Cave Spring. Troy Smith is taking over boys' and girls' cross country at Cave Spring, while Ken Nicely is the Knights' new boys' and girls' tennis coach.

William Byrd also will try to revitalize its boys' track program under new coach Danny Thompson, who was an outstanding all-around athlete at Patrick Henry and Virginia Tech.

Longtime boys' track coach Arnold Humphries is stepping down at Northside. He'll be replaced by Ed Culicerto in outdoor track and Kelly Hatfield for the indoor program. Humphries' final team won the Blue Ridge District boys' title and placed second in Region III.

Also at Northside, Nicki Smith moves up from assistant to head volleyball coach, replacing Donna Culicerto (sister-in-law to Ed) for one year. Donna Culicerto expects to be on maternity leave during the volleyball season.

Broughman was third in the Group AAA state tournament at 103 pounds in 1977. He captained the wrestling team at William and Mary and later wrestled for the U.S.Army. He was just shy of qualifying for the 1984 Olympic Games held in Los Angeles.

``He's the best wrestler I ever coached,'' said Cave Spring athletic director Otis Dowdy, who was the Knights' wrestling coach when Broughman was in high school.

Spangler stepped down from wrestling to concentrate on duties as a head football coach.

Adam Williams was 28-0 for Cave Spring in 1991 before he lost in the Group AAA Northwest Regional championship 130-pound match and the first round of the state. He was All-Timesland his last two years and wrestled two seasons at Washington and Lee. This past year, he was an assistant for Cave Spring while completing work at W&L.

Trent's final Byrd team won the Blue Ridge and Region III titles. The Terriers have all but one starter back next year.

``It's going to be a challenge. But it's a great system with great support from inside and outside the school,'' said Williams. ``It's a great situation for a first-year coach to step into.''

Penny Williams, who was unavailable for comment, has had the Roanoke Valley District's most dominant program in volleyball. She moves to Cave Spring, a team that her Patriots beat 15-9, 15-2 in the RVD semifinals to earn a shot at unbeaten Franklin County last fall. In the finals, the Patriots won the first game and then lost two straight to the Eagles.

Thompson vaulted 15 feet, 3 inches at PH to win the Group AAA outdoor title and set what was then a state mark in 1980. He also won the indoor crown with a 15-2 performance. While at Virginia Tech, Thompson was a Metro Conference pole vault and decathlon champion.
