Salem improved to 11-4 in the second half and extended its Southern Division lead to two games over second-place Kinston, which lost Wednesday. The Avalanche has won four of its first five games on its 10-game road trip, which continues today with a 6:35 p.m. game at Frederick.
With the score tied at 3 in the top of the 10th, Brian Culp hit a one-out double to left field and scored on a double by Jones, a former starting quarterback for the University of Kentucky.
After Keith Grunewald walked, Edgard Velasquez singled Jones home. John Giudice followed with an infield single, and Nate Holdren closed out the big inning with a two-run double.
Curt Conley (3-1) picked up the victory with 2 2/3 innings of one-hit relief pitching. He struck out three.
Avalanche starting pitcher Jamey Wright worked the first six innings, allowing two runs, one earned, and striking out four. He was relieved in the seventh by Bill Bliss, who pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing the game-tying run in the eighth, which was unearned.
The Keys (4-9) grabbed the lead in the fourth inning on an RBI-single by David Lamb.
Salem answered in the fifth on an RBI-double by Giudice that plated Velasquez.
The Avalanche took a 2-1 lead in the sixth when Grunewald's single scored Chris Sexton, but Frederick knotted the score in the bottom of the inning on Chris Kirgen's RBI-single.
Holdren's RBI-double in the seventh, which scored Giudice, gave Salem a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Keys tied the score again when an error by Sexton allowed pinch runner Angel Pagan to score. With two outs and runners at first and second, Lamb singled to right and Tommy Davis tried to score from second. But Davis was thrown out at the plate by Giudice to preserve the tie.
