THE E. PRICE RIPLEY MEMORIAL FOUNDATION, a non-profit educational organization which continues the contributions of a prominent Roanoke life insurance underwriter, has awarded scholarships to five high school seniors in the Roanoke area

Three students received $1,000 scholarships each, and two received $500 scholarships to continue their education.

Ripley, who spent 54 years in the life insurance death until his death in 1987, was active in business and community organizations that focus on the field of financial services and education.

In 1938, he received the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designation - at that time the second CLU designation in Roanoke. In 1952, he became the first agent in the Roanoke area to qualify for the Million Dollar Round Table.

The non-profit foundation annually gives scholarships to high school graduates who have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement balanced with extra-curricular activities and financial need.

This year's recipients are:

Vassiliki Ioannis Farmakis, William Fleming High. She plans to attend Georgetown University and major in business administration. She received The June McBroom Scholarship from the E. Price Ripley Memorial Foundation for $1,000.

Catherine T. Airey, Northside High School. She will attend Northwestern University and major in sciences and foreign languages. She has received an E. Price Memorial Foundation Scholarship for $1,000.

Tamara Patience Payden-Travers, Franklin County High. She will attend Wake Forest University and major in communications. She has received an E. Price Ripley Memorial Foundation Scholarship for $1,000.

Catherine Leigh Higgins, Northside. She will attend the College of William and Mary and major in biology/chemistry/pre-medicine. She is the recipient of The Andrew Thompson Fund Scholarship from the E. Price Ripley Memorial Foundation for $500.

Michael Stephen Hurt, Franklin County . He will attend U. S. Air Force Academy and major in electrical engineering. He has received The Richard Ripley Scholarship from the E. Price Ripley Memorial Foundation for $500.

NATHAN JOHN BIRCKHEAD and WILLIAM MASSELLO IV have received the "Good Citizen" award from the Colonel William Preston Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.

Birckhead, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Birckhead, is a 1995 Northside High School graduate, and Masselllo, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Massello III, is a 1995 Roanoke Catholic School graduate.

EDWIN MOIR WILSON JR., son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin M. Wilson of Roanoke, recently graduated from Woodberry Forest School. Wilson will attend Washington and Lee University in the fall.

ANGELA HOPE JASPER, daughter of Norman Jasper of Vinton and Virginia Draper of Salem, has received a $1,000 scholarship from the 3rd Marine Division Association's Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Jasper attends James Madison University and graduated from Roanoke Valley Christian School.

MARY SPRUILL, daughter of Bonny Spruill of Roanoke, became the first student to address the graduating class at George Mason University at its commencement May 20. Spruill is a graduate of Northside High School.

EMILY COLLIER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William F. Collier of Salem, was selected to attend the Governor's School of the Gifted in visual and performing arts at the University of Richmond.

MICHELE LOUISE KIELTY, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Kielty of Roanoke, has been awarded a full scholarship to earn a master's degree in counseling at Wake Forest University.

Kielty is a 1991 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

The award is given annually to a student who has made the most significant contribution to the college's theater as an actor or production crew member.

Coffey is a junior English major.

MARK PIERCE, son of David and Dreama Piecre of Salem, recently received a bachelor of science degee in accounting with a minor in computer science from Milligan College in Tennessee.

BONNIE KATHERINE HORD of Roanoke was named to the dean's list at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.

DAVID and GAYE BLEVINS of Roanoke received the Distinguished Alumni awards from Ferrum College. David Blevins, a 1969 Ferrum graduate, is principal of Hidden Valley Junior High School, and Gaye Blevins, a 1970 graduate, teaches at Oak Grove Elementary School. They were recognized for their volunteer work with their church, scouting, recreational teams and several community groups.

ROBIN MUNDY of Daleville and TIM WARD of Roanoke have been named to the spring dean's list at Emory & Henry College.

Mundy is the daughter of Sue and Jack Mundy.

LT. GINA HILGER, U.S. Air Force, graduated with a master's degree in public management in international security and economic policy from the University of Maryland Graduate School of Public Affairs. Hilger was awarded a certificate of recognition for excellence in scholarship honoring the student with the highest grade-point average (4.0.)

She is the daughter of Mary and Jerry Hilger of Blue Ridge and graduated from Lord Botetourt High in 1989.

NEW RIVER COMMUNITY COLLEGE recently announced the names of Roanoke area graduates. They are: Regina B. Gravely of Roanoke, associate degree in electrical technology; Gene N. AMY LYNN DeLONG, daughter of Robert and Linda DeLong of Salem, has been named to the dean's list at Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va.

DeLong, a senior, is a 1991 graduate of Salem High School.

ROBIN L. CALDWELL of Roanoke recently graduated from the College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C. with a bachelor of science degree in marine biology.

CARMEL WILLNETTE GILPIN, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David D. Gilpin Roanoke, recently graduated from Greensboro College in Greensboro, N.C., with a bachelor of arts degree in political science.
