SHE'S IN STITCHES OVER IT

You may wonder why the Grand Prize winner of a national contest chose to be identified only as #051-069 of Atlanta and was photographed with a bag over her head.

Proud she was not. A little richer, maybe, but not proud.

#051-069 was awarded $2,400 as the winner of the ``Worst Quilt In the World Contest.'' The contest was created by Ami Simms, author of ``How Not To Make A Prize-Winning Quilt,'' and drew more than 700 entries from across the U.S.

Judges reportedly rejected quilts that did not induce vomiting, prompt the majority of them to laugh or cause shuddering, excessive tearing or blurred vision. Points were also deducted if quilts were free of pet hair, dirt and major stains.

In addition to the Grand Prize, several Special Recognition Awards were bestowed. In the ``Most Disgusting (But Fitting) Name For A Quilt'' category, one such award was given for the entry titled, ``Kitty In The Blender.''

Ms. #051-069's winning entry was described by judges as ``pitiful, yet endearing'' with a ``delightfully schizophrenic'' color scheme.

At least, by maintaining her anonymity, #051-069 could avoid any needling by her friends.
