POLITICIANS WILL LEAD WAY TO BLOOD CENTER

Who says politicians are just full of hot air? Today, at the New River Valley Blood Center in downtown Blacksburg, voters will have a chance to find out what else Montgomery County's office-holders and office-seekers are made of.

Candidates from Montgomery County's Democratic and Republican parties will donate blood from noon to 1 p.m. Supporters and residents are invited to come by and contribute, too.

On hand will be Pat Cupp, Republican candidate for the state Senate; Jim Shuler, the Democrat who represents Blacksburg in the House of Delegates; Larry Linkous, chairman of the county Board of Supervisors, who wants to unseat Shuler; Joey Showalter, who is running for county Commonwealth's Attorney; Doug Marrs, candidate for county sheriff; and Helen St. Clair, candidate for county commissioner of revenue. Other candidates may drop by, Red Cross officials say.

Those same officials lament that only 5 percent of eligible blood donors actually give blood, and not all of those people donate as often as they could.

Donated blood will help New River Valley residents.
