STANLEY TOPS JUNIOR FIELD IN GOLF EVENT

Marty Stanley fired a tournament-record 66 to take a five-shot lead after Thursday's first round of the Andrew Haley Memorial Junior golf tournament in Martinsville.

Stanley, who played his high school golf at Carlisle School in Martinsville, didn't have a bogey in shooting 5-under on the Lynwood Golf Club course. He enters today's final round with a five-shot lead over Roanoker Brian Agee in the featured 16-17 age group.

Neil Norris of Martinsville and Josh Points of Roanoke each shot 73s. Roanoker Jason Orlando is at 74 with Danville's Stephen Harper and Midlothian's Joe Privitera.

Defending champion Nick Varney of Roanoke had to settle for a 75.

In the boys' 14-15 division, Chris Clark shot a 70 to take a two-shot edge on Michael Loftin of Stoneville. Roanokers Brandon LaCroix and Trey Clower were in a cluster at 75, while Daryl Byrd is at 76.

Matt Chandler of Glade Hill and Ryan Stinnett of Amherst each posted 72s lead the boys' 12-13 class. Mike Mansell of Pulaski is third at 75.

In girls' play, Joannah Pattison of Wytheville and Julie Russun of Crumpton, Md., share the lead at 83.

In other sports news in the region:

Jay Hardwick, head pro at the Virginia Tech Golf Club, shot a 71 to finish fourth in the Middle Atlantic PGA Section Championship qualifier in Maryland. Other qualifiers for the MAPGA Section Championship (Aug. 21-23) in Williamsburg were Blacksburg's Jim Williams (74) and Roanokers Tim Holbrook (75) and Roby Roberson (78).

Devon Battle scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Roanoke Hawks to a 73-60 victory over Omaha, Neb., in the 15-and-under AAU national basketball tournament in Bristol, Tenn.

Phillip Klaus added 17 points and eight rebounds for the Hawks, who are 3-2 in the tournament. Raymond Arrington chipped in 14 points.

Roanoke plays Nashville, Tenn., today at 2:30 p.m. at Tennessee High School.

Rod Reedy and Kristen Holt have been hired as assistant women's basketball coaches at Radford University.

Reedy had coached the Pulaski County High School girls for the past 14 years, leading the Cougars to a pair of Group AAA runner-up finishes.

Holt spent the 1993-94 season as an assistant at Xavier University in Cincinnati, where the Musketeers had a 20-9 record. She is a 1992 graduate of Ohio University.
